There will be an estim ated 6,100 new cases o f prostate cancer diag­ nosed in Ontario in 1999 and an estim ated 1,550 men will die from the disease. The Society recom m ends that men over 50 discuss the potential benefits and risks of early detection testing using the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam with their doctors. W hat's new in prostate cancer research: The Canadian Cancer Society supports some of the most innova­ tive prostate cancer research in C anada through the Canadian Prostate Cancer Research Initiative-. This year, the Society contributed $1 .3-m illion over three years to fund five new research projects. Led by Dr. Michael Sherar and Dr. John Trachtenberg of the O ntario C ancer Institute, one of those new projects explores how thermal therapy could be used to wipe out prostate cancer cells while avoiding com plications associated with traditional treatm ents.
