H ouse offers design con cepts o f stu d en ts (C o n tin u e d fro m B 7) The modernism of the 1980's is showcased in the home's front hallway and landing. Student designers Mark Lee and Shahin Sarabi combined contemporary modernism with an accent on elegance using large, abstract pieces of art and neutrals in silver and gray. They experimented with common building materi als, sculpting and shaping metals to fit the shape of the stairway and columns. In the showcase kitchen, we return to the 1950's. Taking its cue from some of the domi nant sylistic motifs of the decade--the exten sive use of chrome and the rounding of cor ners-- the design captures some of the 50's look by using 50's hardware on the kitchen cabinets, along with an old refrigerator and an authentic "chrome set" (kitchen table and chairs). Student designers were Sarah Bredin, Cameron MacNeil and Christopher Stewart. The family/media room harkens back to the 1930's. Student designers Catherine Heasman and Claire O'Sullivan used rich textures, deep hues and high patinas to create a room with a sense of luxury, much like the sophisticated spaces where upper class families of the day would have relaxed or entertained friends. The master bedroom/ensuite are distinc tively 90's style, with clean lines and a neutral colour palette. Modem classical pieces are combined with Asian and African motifs to create an eclectic space. The home's main bath was designed to cre ate a calming, seaside atmosphere complete with sand-like floor finish. Natural materials and colourful prints all tie the theme together. Student designers for the three rooms were Kim Lefranq and Kathleen Wright. Other highlights of the house include an art deco playroom, a "biomorphic meditation room" and a laundry room that the traces the evolution over the century of this most mun dane of household chores. The showcase house is open to the public until November 12. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open at the following times: Wednesday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. There is an admission fee of $2, proceeds to benefit the Oakville Parent and Child Centre. Note: Most tulip bulbs sold in Canada are 12 cm or larger. 6. As a rule of thumb, "The big ger the bulb, the bigger the flower." However, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. It depends on the uses you have in mind. Choose larger bulbs to accent a walkway or to plant around a lamp post -- areas that will be seen up close. Consider smaller bulbs when you want to create c o s t-e f fe c t iv e mass plantings, especially ones designed to be seen from a dis tance. 7. Many bulbs come back year after year. Others diminish over time. To get the most 'bang for your buck,' look for bulb packag ing marked: "Good for Naturalizing," or "Good for Perennializing." As a rule, 'nat uralizing' means that the bulbs will multiply over time and their flowers will become a perma nent, seasonal fea ture in your gar den. Daffodils and other narcissi, cro cuses, snowdrops, and grape h y a c i n t h s (Muscari) are examples. "Perennializin g" means that the bulbs will come back for three to five years, or so, before they start to diminish. Many hybrid tulips and Dutch hyacinths (the big fragrant kind) are exam ples. 8. Do not buy bulbs that have been improperly stored or subject ed to late summer heat waves at your local store. It's best to keep bulbs in their packages, with their tags attached, until you plant them. i S ¥ I http://www.hollandpark.com THI Wood Room • TABLES & CHAIRS •JELLY CUPBOARDS • MIRRORS & PANTRIES • CHINA CABINETS > ROCKING CHAIRS • SHELVES* WALL UNITS • COFFEE & END TABLES Homes & Gardens House offers design concepts of students Now Is The Time To Winterize Your Garden Fresh Fall Bouquets Pumpkin Arrangements Indoor Potted Mums Fall Decorative Collection Holland Park DUNDAS row green Earn a $20.00 cash bonus certificate when you accumulate $400.00 in purchases.
