24 Oakville Beaver Weekend A d v e rto ria l Sunday, October 3,1999 TRAVEL & ENTERTAINMENT Celebrate Thanksgiving in 19th century style Delight your senses with the scenic surroundings of a 19th century home stead, the ambiance of the historic Hearth Room, the taste of scrumptious Thanksgiving fare and the warmth of hospitality...at the Halton Region Museum on Sunday, Oct. 10th. The museum is a nineteenth century homestead situated in Kelso Conservation Area near Milton. The pic tu resque setting beneath the Niagara Escarpment was once part of a farm established by the Alexander family in the 1830s. Many of the original farm buildings are still used by the Museum including the bam, piggery, blacksmith shop and stone farmhouse. The traditional Thanksgiving fare will be served in the 1870s Hearth Room. As its name suggests, the centre piece is a wall-to-wall stone fireplace designed like those commonly found in mid-nineteenth century inns. Handhewn wooden beams grace the fieldstone walls. Limited seating is at 1 p.m. Advanced booking required. The price for Thanksgiving dinner is $20/adult and $10/child (three to 12 years). For those looking to build their appetite for dinner, the Halton Region Museum is also featuring a two-hour guided Escarpment hike departing at 11 a.m. Hikers have the choice of two routes -- one to the standing ruins of the his toric Christie-Henderson lime kilns. The lime kilns, constructed by D.D. Christie of the Kelso area, were used to bum chunks of limestone from a nearby quar ry. The burnt stone was turned into pow dered lime for the production of mortar and plaster. The second hiking route is along the edge of the Escarpment to the tip of Milton Heights, the bluff over looking Highway 401 at Milton with spectacular views of the surrounding area. Kelso Conservation Area is provid ing the unique opportunity of taking a chairlift ride to the top of the Niagara Escarpment. Guided hikes are $5/person, chair lift rides $2/adult and $1/senior and child. While at the museum, visitors can wander through the Exhibits Building, play in the new children's Discovery Centre or join in on the Discovery Hunt around the grounds of the nineteenth century historic homestead. For reservations or further informa tion, call the Halton Region Museum at 905-875-2200 ext. 0. Groups welcome.
