22 * Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, October 3, 1999 K eep th o se resu lts co m in g in to th e paper In the world of sports, this time of year is a time of change. The summer sports have all but ended and the win ter sports are revving up to full speed. It's a good time to, once again, out line how the many teams that make up the town's vibrant sports scene can go about getting coverage in the Beaver, if they desire so. In fact, we've been get ting a steady stream of calls from par ents who drew the short straw and have been 'awarded' their team's publicity task. First of all, despite continuing growth in Oakville and the expanding number of sports teams and leagues, we still endeavour to publish all house league, select and rep team reports. By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR ever, is recap a portion of the season, and this works out quite well for them. The key word is recap. A lot of people ask about content and length and, again, there is flexibili ty. Keep it short, sweet and to the point, particularly if it's exhibition, routine regular season or routine tour nament play. A scoring summary and maybe a couple brief highlights should suffice. Save the bigger splashes for when the team does something out of the ordinary. GUIDELINES All submissions should be legible (i.e., preferably typed). Especially with house league reports, because of the high volume and massive typesetting requirements we simply can't exercise the same care over each name as we do in a news story. We'll take our best shot at deciphering the name and if it's too hard to read, w e'll reduce it to an initial or, in the worst case scenario, just leave it out. The best way to get us the report, these days, is via e-mail or internet. My e-mail is nnelson@haltonsearch.com. This way is a real time-saver because it saves us from retyping the report. If you can send it this way, however, you should phone to alert us. We completely understand that not everyone is plugged in (my household, included) and so we happily accept reports that are faxed (337-5567) or dropped off (467 Speers Road). Heck, mail 'em if you want. One method we usually don't like is over the phone because it's so time consuming. HIGH SCHOOL Incidentally, if you're wondering about the lack of high school game reports, it's because we receive none. Everything we do receive -- i.e., the high school scores and standings -- is published. But there are just too many games for us to follow up on individually, let alone attend. Take next week (Oct. 48), for instance. The Halton school board has scheduled for its high schools (counting both senior and junior varsity teams), 32 girls basket ball games, 26 field hockey games, 14 football games and 28 boys volleyball games. That's 100 games! Again, we would love to publish the results for all the Oakville teams involved ... if we can get them. HOUSE LEAGUE REPORTS Regular house league reports must be submitted on a league wide basis * which is how they've always come in, anyway. But if they started coming in `game by game' or even `team by team', it would just be a nightmare to correctly sort out. In fall and winter, it's hockey that predominates (with some basketball), and these are generally straightforward, including the score of the game along with the point getters. We can guarantee the house league scores being published as long as they are handed into us on a timely basis, preferably after each game but at least after a week or two. It really does gum up the system when leagues start dropping off piles of outdated scores. RECAP To recap the summer season that just ended, I can go on record as saying that every house league score and rep report received was published. Well, almost. A very few did fall between the cracks, mainly with the e-mail which we were just getting off the ground. On the other hand, there is always room for improvement. We need to reduce the delay in getting the handed in reports (particularly the house league reports) published in the paper. Not to pass the blame, but this job can be made easier if submitted reports follow the above guidelines. W INTER NO N-CO NTACT UOCKEV LEAGUE HALTON MEN'S HOCKEY LEAGUE · Non-contact · Prime time games · 26th season of operation · Sweaters/socks 5 provided · Trophies · Balanced teams · Excellent officiatim [tin g · Individual entries REPREPORTS With rep reports there's flexibility. Most of the teams prefer the indi vidual game reports and, again, we encourage handing them in on a timely basis, in which case we can guarantee publication. Again, what is tough to handle, is if a rep team all of the sudden hands in all of its detailed game reports over several weeks. What some teams like to do, how The Oakville Rangers AA novice hockey team, sponsored by Lucent Technologies, has been stretching their legs over a series of exhibition games held recently. This year's squad seems poised and ready for action, after posting a 3-2 record during the pre-season against local com petition. The pre-season kicked off with Oakville shutting out visit ing Brampton 4-0. This was a team effort with six boys in on the scoring: David Provost and Tyler Schlonies (1 goal 1 assist each); Josh Ceccarelli and Ryan McMahon (1 goal each); Darren Quan and Steven Merrick (1 assist each). Goalie Joe Trauzzi stood tall in the pipes to earn his shutout. Oakville was then tripped up by arch-rival Burlington, los ing 6-5. The game started out all Oakville, with Jordan Bortolotti executing a couple of pretty set-ups to Patrick Readshaw and Merrick in the first period. Then both sides trad ed a pair of goals in the second, with Michael Irvine (assisted by Jacob Legein and Grant Kizlik) and Joshua Ceccarelli (assisted by Connor McMonagle and Tyler Schlonies) scoring for the Rangers. The third period was all Burlington, however, with only Ryan McMahon's goal (assisted by Legein), to show against four by Burlington. Next was a trip to Orangeville to play the Caledon Hawks, where our boys lost a squeaker 3-2. Orangeville led off the scoring with a goal late in the first. Then late in the second, O akville's Legein evened the score off a nice pass by Readshaw. Caledon regained their lead early in the third, then Bortolotti (assisted by Schlonies) scored for Oakville. It was back and forth hockey throughout the third, with Caledon finally scoring to earn their hard-fought victory. Following this, our boys played well to gain revenge in a re match against Burlington, winning 2-1. Oakville's Ceccarelli opened the scoring early in the second (assisted by Legein), then Kozlik scored the eventual game winner, unassisted mid way through the third. Although Burlington did manage a goal in the dying seconds, it wasn't enough to overcome a spirited effort by our boys. Closing out the pre-season, Oakville held their composure against a chippy Brampton squad and earned a 3-1 victory. Matthew Lorito exploded for a pair of Ranger goals (assisted by Jason Prolas and Ceccarelli), then early in the third, Steven Merrick iced the game on a goal set up by Gavin Risi and McMahon. Special consideration goes to goalie Conor O 'Kelly for his quality work in net. In closing, the team and their families sincerely thank the numerous participants in their `Swing for the Kids' golf tour nament fundraiser, held at Richview G olf Club last weekend. A great time was had by all. £ £ £ £ 2 J S S lffS l! A Devil of a time in opener The Oakville Rangers novice A team opened their regular season at home on Saturday by defeating the Erin Mills Devils 11-1. After weeks of training and preparation, the Oakville boys were ready to play hockey. Erin Mills kept it close through the end of the first period, trailing only 2-0 but strong defence combined with good passing brought Oakville five more unanswered goals in the second peri od and another four in the third. Excellent goaltending throughout the game was provided by Grayson Douglas and Matthew Fyfe. Several key stops were recorded as Oakville outshot their opponents 33 to 11. Scoring for Oakville were Brian Coules (2 goals), Matthew Lynett, Jonathan Brand (1 goal 3 assists), Michael McGilvery (2 goals 2 assists), Michael Baird (1 goal 2 assists), Daren Quan, Gabriel Di'Rullo (2 goals) and Patrick Irish. Additional assists were also provided by Hollis Milroy (2), Taylor Zeismann (3), Max Mihaichuk and Matthew Fillman. The Novice A Rangers next game is on the road, Saturday in Guelph.
