In a join t letter to M inister o f Education M itzie Hunter, both H alton Catholic D is trict School Board Chair Diane Rabenda and H alton District School Board Chair Kelly A m os outlined w hat the im pending increase w ill m ean to the already chronic shortage of sch ool bus drivers. "There is currently a shortfall o f 54 sch ool bus drivers in H alton, w h ich m eans that 12 per cent o f the b us routes in the region do not have a regular driver," stated the letter sent in early December. "The average hourly w age for sch ool bus drivers in Halton is betw een $13 and $1 7 / hour, w h ich unfortunately m eans that our lo cal sch ool bus operators are com peting w ith other industries that offer m in im um w age for w ork that is less dem anding," the letter con tinued. "W e are very concerned that the m inim um w age increase w ill only exacerbate an already challenging situation. If the sch ool bus driver w age does not increase proportionally, school bus operators w ill be struggling even m ore to recruit and retain drivers," stated the corre spondence. H alton Student Transportation Services "w orks collaboratively" w ith the tw o boards to ensure that route efficiencies are opti m ized.
