The 56-year-old Glen Abbey Golf Club instructor won the PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada last month in Coral Springs, Fla. "Not only is this is my first PGA of Canada na tional championship win, it's my first win as a golf professional," Cochrane told PGA of Canada after his two-round total of 72-69-141 bested the field. "Even though it was a long time coming, I really felt like it was my time to win." Cochrane has been a PGA of Canada member for more than 20 years. The victory, worth $9,000, came on the TPC Eagle Trace course. His three-under-par total was two shots better than a pair of other competitors. Cochrane recorded four birdies on the back nine, including three in a row on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. "I felt zero anxiety out there on the back," said Co chrane, who lives in Bronte. "I chipped in on No. 11 and also made a bunch of crucial putts as well." The course layout includes an island green, three greens surrounded by wooden bulkheads and -- a rarity in southern Florida -- not a single palm tree on the property. All four par-3s are protected by water and bunkers. "I really like the finishing holes here at TPC Eagle Trace," Cochrane said. "All week I've felt comfortable on the back nine, which helped me stay committed to hitting my shots." -- PGA of Canada Four siblings from Oakville now share more than a last name. The Halls added their fourth black belt to the family recently when nine-year-old Olivia re ceived her first-degree belt last month. All four earned the lofty status training at Horizon Taekwondo on Wyecroft Road, owned by head in structor Master Louie Sanchez. The first Hall to gain a black belt was James, now a Grade 12 student at Abbey Park High School. He earned his belt at the age of 10. Next was Alex, 15, who was awarded his belt when he was nine. He's in Grade 10 at Abbey Park. Natalie, 12, a Grade 7 Heritage Glen Public School student, got her black belt at age nine as well. Olivia, who is in Grade 4 at Heri tage Glen, gained her belt in a cer emony at the club on Nov. 25. She has been practising the discipline since she was three or four, earning the black belt designation at nine, the minimum age allowed at Inter national Taekwondo Federationsanctioned clubs. It marks the first time that four siblings have all earned black belts at Horizon. Sanchez, a seventh-degree black belt who opened Horizon 17 years ago, said that each student is dif ferent, but the Hall kids have one thing in common. "They're always willing to help out at the club," he says. "Even the little one, Olivia, she wants to come in every day and help out." Like others who have advanced to the highest level belt, the Halls had to compete in a variety of tour naments, attend classes two or three times a week and volunteer their time to assist younger kids working on attaining lower level belts. That's in addition to the ac tual training sessions and seminars with master and grandmaster in structors. The mother of the four, Jenny, said the classes her kids have tak en has been "amazing" for all of them.
