Schizas landed her two triples and double Axel for the first time in com pe tition to earn a career-best 4 4 .7 0 points for her short program. "I trained really hard heading into Challenge and was more confident," said Schizas, who was first after break ing her previous personal best by a whopping six points in the short pro gram. Three skaters topped the 80-point mark -- no other skaters were above 72 -- in the free program to claim the three podium positions. W hile Schizas' score of 6 7 .9 8 fell short of what she achieved at the Skate Ontario Section als, her overall total of 1 1 2 .6 8 was still an improvement. "It (free program ) kind of fell apart," admitted Schizas, whose pre-season training included a trip to the NextGen camp in Montreal. Nancy Lemaire, her coach at the Mil ton Skating Club, said the 14-year-old did a good job of handling nerves and expectations at the competition, but still sees room for improvement. "She just needs to find that connec tio n ... to bring both routines together," Lemaire said. "She's capable of finish ing around the 125-point range." W ith her fourth-place finish, Schi- zas earned her first trip to the national championships, which will be held in Vancouver in January. Bennet Toman of Skate Oakville fin ished eighth in senior men's division to earn a return trip to nationals. Toman has finished eighth at nationals each of the past two years. In her first year of senior competi tion, Skate Oakville's Helene Carle fin ished 11th with a score of 135.22. That marked a more than 26-point improve ment from her score at Ontario Sec tionals. Most of that came from a gain of 21 points in her free program. Sister Catherine Carle also finished 11th in the junior division. Her score of 1 3 3 .5 2 was also a significant improve ment, 11 points higher than the score that earned her a bronze medal at the Ontario Sectionals. Kaitlyn Chubb and Alex Gunther ad vanced to nationals with a 12th-place finish in the junior dance. Also earning a trip to Vancouver was Jaim e Gabbard, who was 16th in the novice women's division. Top local finishers in the pre-novice division, who do not advance to na tionals included Daniel Nazdrynau, ninth in pre-novice men's, Audrey Carle, 13th in pre-novice women's, and Emma Goodstadt and Joseph Perrier, 17th in pre-novice dance. -- Steve Leblanc and Herb Garbutt, Metroland Media Oakville Golf Club's Bevington retiring after 3 7 years as head professional The head professional at the Oakville Golf Club for the past 3 7 years is retiring. Bill Bevington was honoured at a reception last month at the club, with more than 280 members and guests attending. He was presented with a lifetime membership to the OGC. Bevington, born and raised in Oakville, is a past winner of the Canadian Club Professional Championship, the Ontario As sistant Professional Championship and a four-time participant in the RBC Canadian Open. Twice he won the Ontario Champion of Champions and has contributed to many Pro-Am team wins, often taking home the top professional trophies at the proams. Prior to accepting the head pro position at the Oakville Golf Club, Bevington began his golf career as a caddy at the Upper Canada Golf Course, now Glen Abbey. He also served as an assistant professional at the Huntington Golf Club, Cherry Hills Golf Club in Fort Erie and Mississauga Golf Club. Her finish qualified Schi zas for the national cham pionships in Vancouver in January. | photo courtesy Danielle Earl Photography Sheridan m en's volleyball team enters holiday break on a winning note The Sheridan Bruins used a balanced attack to sweep Cambrian College Sunday and head into the break on a three-game winning streak. Andrew Cianci had nine kills, Matt Stokes and Marcel Phang each had eight and Andre Kopf had seven in the Bruins' 25-17, 25-14, 25-20 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball win. That al lowed setter Ricky Davids to chalk up 35 assists, giv ing him his highest assists per set total of the season. Defensively, Kopf had 12 digs and Michael Kong had 10. Kong also had three service aces. Less than 24 hours earlier, Sheridan defeated Boreal in four sets. The weekend wins improved Sheridan to 5 -4 on the season. "We were able to pick up two big wins and fin ish the semester above .500, just two wins back of second place," said head coach Frank Pento. "I'm really proud of what we've accomplished so far while dealing with injuries and illness. The guys came together and put together some great performances. W e are very excited for this break to review and analyze our game films, as well as recover." Sheridan opened the season with a sweep of the defending Ontario champions, Mohawk, but then lost four of its next five matches. Three of those loses came in five sets. Chris Adams led Sheridan with 12 points on eight kills, three blocks and a service ace in Sat urday's win against Boreal. Ross MacCauley had seven kills and Matt Stokes had six. Flavio Polo had 16 digs. Sheridan returns to the court with a pair of home matches, Saturday, Jan. 13 against St. Clair and Sunday, Jan. 14 against Niagara. Women's come back vs. Cambrian Tara Aune had a season-high 15 kills as well as five blocks on her way to a career-best 21 points as the Sheridan Bruins rallied from a two sets to one deficit to down Cambrian College 3 -2 Sunday. The Bruins got impressive defensive efforts in the 19-25, 2 7 -25, 2 2-25, 2 5 -1 8 , 15-9 victory.
