The Town' s Planning and Development Council voted Monday, Dec. 4, to approve Official Plan and zoning amendments to permit the construction of a community centre, park, residential housing and seniors-oriented housing, including civic space, at the Reynolds Street and Macdonald Road location. "We now have the certainty we need to proceed with two key projects," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, referencing the former hospital site project and the Brantwood school project. "Having control of these properties allows the Town to protect the character of the neighbourhood and optimize green space while providing for the much-needed community centre." The former hospital site would also feature the former OTMH' s existing parking garage, which would operate in conjunction with the 45,000-sq.-ft. community centre. A new entrance to the site would be created at Lawson and Reynolds streets, which will allow access to the community centre, parking garage, former Oakville Trafalgar High School (OTHS) building and associated civic space, and the future seniors-oriented housing area. The park, which will be located north of the community centre, is expected to be approximately 0.6 hectares in size. Town staff said members of the public would have the opportunity to weigh in on the park' s design. The plan calls for an area of low-density residential development, intended to accommodate 19 detached dwellings, to be built along the south side of Macdonald Road and the west side of Allan Street. An area of medium-density residential development would feature 16 townhouses on the east side of the new public street, across from the future park and community centre. The seniors-oriented housing facility, which can have a maximum height of four storeys, is expected to house about 35 independent dwelling units. This number may grow if the former OTHS site is incorporated into the seniors housing component as expected.
