Can we do the right thing? Glen Abbey. Just once can we do what is right and decent and save this absolute jewel for our children and future generations? It is unique in this province and indeed in all the world. Anyone involved should read the poem The Victorian House by Philip Child. It gives so perfectly the sense of the travesty that is happening here. Shelter residents inspire with their strength continued from p.6 set up their new life free of violence, is universal. They have all told us the same thing. They need groceries. They need toiletries. They need cleaning supplies. They need school supplies, kids' clothing and also, fun things to do like take their children to the movies, out to dinner like we all do. This holiday season, if you are looking to do something with your family, church group, office mates, friends, please consider a gift card drive to Halton Women's Place. Gift cards allow women and children to participate fully in their community, through social events and activities -- all through the year as they need, not just during the holidays. Our Transitional and Support Counsellors work with women after they have left the shelter, providing continued counselling, referrals and support, including items such as gift cards to help them through a tough time. We receive an abundance of toys each year and we are so grateful. This gift card drive would also be so appreciated by the women and children through the holidays and through their first year on their own. On behalf of them, we thank you. Making the decision to start a new life free of violence is often a difficult one. We continue to be inspired by the strength that each woman shows as she comes into our shelters, or makes that first call for help. Many times, these women will face great obstacles -- lower income, lack of affordable housing, custody issues and the loss of family traditions. Your support tells each woman that you believe in them. We look forward to working with our community through this holiday season and beyond, as we continue to raise awareness about woman abuse and about our programs and services. Help us, invest in keeping women and children safe.
