M y verdict: a good video, but don't spend the big bucks to see it at the theatre. ...Brian I liked it for all the reasons Brian didn't. Let me start off by saying that I'm not a George Clooney fan, and I had never heard of the other two lead actors. The two female characters, both reporters, are badly acted and totally superfluous. But I liked this movie precisely because it was not the usual superficial action flick. From one scene to another, the American sol diers change from good guys to bad guys and back again to satisfy their own self-interests. The Clooney character makes excuses for Family Run Businesses who ^ give Personal Attention j the soldiers, both American and Iraqi, by observing that necessity is the major motiva tor of human behaviour. The soldiers are doing fine as long as they stay focused on committing the victimless crime of stealing the confiscated Kuwaiti gold. Their problems start when they decide to help a group of Iraqi civilians. Expecting gratitude, they are met instead with hostility because to the Iraqis the soldiers represent the worst of American political policy. Many of the choices that the American sol diers make had me squirming in my seat. For instance, they enlist the help of the Iraqi sol diers to steal the gold by agreeing to ignore their new partners' brutal punishment of the civilian population. But the movie effectively makes the point that sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest choice of all. In my opinion, even Brian's Hollywood ending can be interpreted as the soldiers mak ing one last deal to save themselves from being court martialed. This movie is not for the faint-of-heart. The imagery of violence is graphic, and the messages of the movie challenge simplistic definitions of right and wrong, good and bad. Even though I liked it, I found some of the plot twists very improbable and some of the scenes depicting the horrors of war horrible because they are so badly done. But, all in all, I liked the movie. ...Christine My verdict: I would recommend it for the big screen. I do not think it would be as effective on video.
