SdridaV, CJdtdber 10,4999 OaSdnfld Bgavfert WebReMif - 15 A new medical approach to weight management W hy do so many of us lose weight successfully, only to regain it as soon as we try to live "normally" again? Are we "stuck" at a pre-set weight? Medical research is now finding that weight "set points" may actually exist. Dr. Ronnie Aronson, Endocrinologist at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Specialist in Obesity, explains the obstacles to weight loss: "40 to 80 per cent of our weight is pre-determined by our genetic makeup. The rest is affected by our Metabolic Rate, the calories we bum in normal daily life. Our body's natural response to "diet ing" is to lower the Metabolic Rate N the more you lose, the more challenging it gets!" "Weight management is far more effective if you accept that overweight is a life-long disorder, similar to Diabetes or High Blood Pressure," Dr. Aronson explains. As a specialist in Obesity Management, Dr. Aronson has established a commu nity clinic that takes a more long-term approach. The Lifestyle Metabolism Center" (LMC*) provides patients with a multi disciplinary team: dietitians, kinesiologists, occupational ther apists and psychiatrist. Each individual works with patients one-on-one, each in their own area. Karri Koach and Sharon Code, Registered Dietitians, provide dietary teaching but include behavioral modification techniques that address basic life habits: grocery shopping, menu planning, and hunger recognition. Wendy Davis, Certified Kinesiologist (exercise specialist), undertakes a basic fitness assessment and then designs a personalized activity program that patients can enjoy. Wendy explains, "Over the course of the year, fitness level improves and so does the Metabolic Rate N as we add muscle (lean mass) and reduce fat, our Resting Metabolic Rate rises." Mary Forham, Occupational Therapist, has an exten sive background in counselling for all eating disorders, includ ing Obesity. The supportive therapy she provides through the year-long program is a unique and critical component of the program's success. The LMC* program has been based on decades of research to optimize patient success: the one-year program duration, the visit frequency (semi-monthly to monthly) and counselling in life and stress management. Lindsay Letkeman, LMC* Program Administrator, orients each patient to their schedule for the year and often finds that patients are skeptical. The principles of this approach have been researched for years but, more importantly, the LMC* Program has proven effective for almost three years in Halton/Mississauga with a response rate that almost matches the best of the "diet" med ications. At six months, patients have a 40 per cent response rate and lose an average of 9 per cent of their starting weight and 4.4 inches off their waist. Newly available medications, in addition to the benefits of the Program, will likely provide for even greater potential for permanent weight loss, for appropri ate patients.
