D epression and M anic D epression are not signs of w eakness, they are illnesses that can be treated. O nly one in three will ever seek help and that's a tragedy, because depressive disorders are the m ost treat able o f all mental illnesses. Som etim es, people don't recognize the sym ptom s or they refuse to seek help due to the stigm a surrounding mental illness. If you had a broken leg, . you w ouldn't think tw ice about going to your doctor but, unfortunately, when it com es to depression, many people feel asham ed or em barrassed about seeking treatment. E veryone experiences problem s and misfortunes, and m any people can become depressed tem porar ily when things don't go as they would like. Experiences o f failure com m only result in feelings o f worthlessness and self-blame, while per sonal losses cause feelings o f sadness, disappointm ent, and em ptiness. These feel ings are normal and usually pass after a short time. W hen these feelings last for several weeks and begin to interfere with a person's work and social life, then it's tim e to seek help. D epressive illness can change the w ay a person thinks, behaves, and acts. W hen a person experi ences m anic-depression, they go through cycles of depression, norm al m ood, and mania. T he C anadian M ental Health Association is run ning a six-week sem inar for people affected by D epression and M anic Depression, as well as fam i ly m em bers and friends. The next M ood D isorders E ducation & S elf-H elp G roup is bein g held W ednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m ., Oct. 27th to Dec. 1st. T h e sem in ar w ill take place at the O akville C M H A office at 488 K err St. T he cost is $30 per fam ily and pre-registration is required.
