First in their pool in Peterborough The Oakville minor atom AAA Rangers, sponsored by Windsor Pump and Rapid Aid, had mixed success in their first tournament of the year in Peterborough. The Rangers finished first in their pool but then were knocked out in the elimination round. In the opening game of the tourna ment, Oakville started strongly, skating to a 4-0 win over Quinte Red Devils. Oakville goals were scored by Jacob Truant (2), John Kurtz and Sam Gagner. Assists went to Brendan Taylor, Jordy Watts, Michael Young, Kyle Badham and Anthony Albrecht. Oakville goalie Graeme Moffatt had to work to earn his shutout as he stopped a penalty shot in the third period to pre serve the 4-0 Oakville victory. In the second game, Oakville came up with a flat effort and fell to Burlington by a 6-2 score. Brendan Taylor scored an unassisted marker and Kellan Lain added the second from Jamie Kulla. Against Whitby, the Rangers seemed determined to put the Burlington game behind them and came out flying, scor ing three breakaway first period goals, en route to a 4-0 win. Jeremy Webster earned the shutout. Goals were scored by Jordy Watts (2), Sam Gagner and Brendan Taylor. Assists went to Jacob Truant (2), Stuart Favretto, Kellan Lain, Anthony Albrecht and Brendan Taylor. Having won their division, Oakville found themselves up against Oshawa in the elimination round. Oshawa came out flying and found themselves up 2-0 within the first five minutes of the game. Oakville carried the balance of play for the rest of the game, but only Kevin Oliveira could find the back of the net, rifling a shot to the top comer late in the game with an assist to Brendan Taylor. Oakville kept pressing, but could not come up with the equalizer, and the Rangers were eliminated from the tour nament. Bri-Co are the OMBA rookie ball champs. BACK ROW: John Huether (asst, coach), Richard Benn, Jordan Grant, W illiam Metcalfe, Sean Kirkconnell, David Brown (coach), Katie Zemeckas, Patrick Donnelly and Patrick Chiasson. FRONT ROW: Eric Chiasson, Daniel Guidoni, Ryan Brown, Steven Huether and Iain Keay. Sem ifinal loss to Vaughan Kings The Oakville Novice AAA Rangers made it to the semifinals in tournament play, before bowing out 6-0 to the Vaughan Kings. The Rangers fought their way throughout the game with no success. The few good scoring chances they had went for naught as the Vaughan goaltender blanked them when the opportu nity arose. Two goals by Vaughan in each period finished the tournament for the gamey Oakville Rangers. The Larry Bramscoe player-of-the-game was lan Paradis who was solid in a two-way effort. Oakville had a good preliminary round, and here's the recap ... 6-4 OVER STONEY CREEK Notwithstanding that this game was in tournament, not league play, the Novice AAA Rangers found pleasure in beating the Stoney Creek team 6-4, avenging a previous 10-5 humiliation. The score differential was never more than two goals, indicating that this was a close contest until the final whis tle. Both teams scored early in the first frame, before the visiting Rangers netted two more before period end, the third goal being a shorthanded marker. Stoney Creek closed the gap to one before a threaded pass from Aaron Kachowski to `Scooter' Tanski resulted in a shot on net with Kachowski cashing in on a rebound. Two more in the third, the last one coming with three minutes to play, cemented the contest. Assists to five players: Tanski (2), Adam DiMarco (2), David Provost, Spencer Metcalfe and Patrick Chiasson. The Rangers' balanced play was evi dent from the scoring which went to six players -- Tyler Stothers, Tanski, Provost, Metcalfe, Kachowski and Watts. A sound effort by the Rangers and kudos to all. The Scott Goodyear playerof-the-game was Adam DiMarco. 21 OVER TORONTO NATS The chance to play the Toronto Nats of the MTHL seemed enough incentive for the Novice AAA Rangers to do their best and they prevailed 2-1. The first period was tightly played, and it took a powerplay goal by the Rangers to open the scoring, Steven Guzzo from `Elvis' Scalia and Patrick Chiasson after two sparkling stops by goaltender David Clement. A Mitchel Fillman to Adam DiMarco pass resulted in a shot on goal with David Provost knocking in the rebound. The Nats closed the margin to one with a tally midway through the third. From that point on, the Toronto team lit erally stormed the Oakville end of the ice for the equalizer, but the Rangers combined all the elements needed to fend the tide -- backchecking, solid defence and stellar netminding. Clement earned the PJ Construction player-ofthe-game. 31 OVER BRAMPTON With two tournament wins under its belt, the Novice AAA Rangers were on the prowl for a third, and it came in a hard-fought 3-1 decision over the Brampton Battalion who seem to save their best for the Oakville squad. A powerplay goal at the six minute mark of the first by Patrick Marsh, from Scott Tanski and David Provost, got the Rangers off to a comfortable start. Two shorthanded goals in each of the final two frames, Tanski unassisted, and Mitchell Fillman from Spencer Metcalfe, sandwiched a Brampton mark er in the third. The Battalion outplayed the Rangers by a wide margin in the third and the heroics of Peter DeSalvo, Ficel player-of-the-game, preserved the win. Great com eback to win rookie ball championship Bri-Co pulled off a great comeback to edge Green Giants 11-9 in the Oakville Minor Baseball Association rookie ball championship. Several early game errors by Bri-Co contributed to a 9-2 deficit after three innings. A sharp unassisted double play by Iain Keay to end the fourth inning started the incredible comeback. Bri-Co entered the sixth and final inning down 9-6 and they promptly reduced it fur ther to 9-7 and then loaded the bases for their best hitter, Sean Kirkconnell. He cleared the bases with a triple to give Bri-Co a 10-9 lead. Kirkconnell completed his journey around the bases, for the insurance run, on a single by Ryan Brown, to cap off the fiverun (mercy rule) sixth inning. A strong defensive effort held the Giants to a single hit in the bottom of the sixth. Brampton carried the play for the majority of the game, and showed fantas tic forechecking, making life in their own end a nightmare for the Blades. The Capitals had Oakville beat in every aspect of the game. The game was knotted 1-1 after 20 minutes, with both teams getting ample chances, and Brampton led 5-2 after the second period. Brampton's offensive assault was highlighted by Simon Mangos, who had a goal and four assists. Kenny Sousa and Thomas Witte each had two goals, with Shawn Cerveira, Matthew Pantalone, Trevor Large, and Justin McCutcheon adding goals. Jeff Street had three assists, Witte had two, while Large, McCutcheon, Brandon Dawe and John Wistanley added single helpers. Mike Tarantino, who had two goals and an assist, was named Player of the Game for the Blades. Bob Jaggard had a goal and an assist. Jason Sajko had the other goal. Mike Porter had two assists while Brandon Cordua, Jeff Curran, and Stu MacCrimmon added assists. IN MILTON The Oakville Blades played "a very good game" at home on Sunday, but, unfortunately, against the power house Milton Merchants, it wasn't quite enough to get back into the win column, as they were edged 3-1. "It went right down to the wire," said general manager George McDonald. The Blades took a 1-0 lead into third period. Milton tied it up and McDonald said the Blades ran into a tough call which paved the way for the Milton goahead goal with the man advantage. Milton added an insurance marker into an empty net. UPCOMING There's no rest for the weary, and the Blades are gearing up for a hectic week end. They have their usual home game on Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville against the Mississauga Chargers and are then on the road Saturday in Georgetown and Monday in Buffalo. On the positive side, G.M. McDonald said it's an opportunity for the team to really bond together. + * * · * * * * * * |K b .
