Cornerstone Baptist Church will hold its first service, at Heritage Glen School on Pilgrim's Way, this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The new church is being sponsored by the Mississauga International Baptist Church. Cornerstone is part of an expansion program the denomi nation describes as `church planting.' "There's been an emphasis and renewed interest in church planting in Ontario over the past three to four years," explains Brian Thiessen, pastor of Mississauga International Baptist Church and president of the Baptist Church Planting Ministry - Canada (BCPMC). Between 15 and 20 Independent Baptist Churches support BCPMC, "and for the next six months, they will be provid ing financial support to Cornerstone," said Thiessen. Cornerstone's pastor, Rick Rust, has over the past five years, been involved with starting three new churches as an associate pastor. He has been an associate pastor for 12 years. The new Glen Abbey church will be his first as a senior pas tor. "I feel a desire and a passion to see new churches started in Ontario," says Rust. The three churches he helped plant are in Ancaster, Waterdown and Mississauga "There's no Independent Baptist church here so we feel there's a fairly good chance that we will be supported," says Bruce Cook, associate pastor of Cornerstone. Rust adds that each Independent Baptist church is free-standing - hence the word `independent' in the denomination's name. Cook was previously associate pastor at Mississauga International Baptist Church for two years, having arrived in this area from the United States. "Our desire for church planting comes from a result of recent statistics which show that church attendance is declin ing across Canada," says Thiessen, "but not in the Greater Toronto Area. There's strong growth for church attendance in this area. "Statistics show that the GTA has the least number of for the Lejaby Fitting Event Beale fro m Lejaby p ia as Thurs_ Oct 21st U an>-7pni Gift with purchiSe & a chance to win $100 Lejaby Gift Certificate Your Fitting Experts roro. petite to full figure A-H 1 0 7 R e y n o l d s S t . "All three of us are involved in church planting, and with 5.5 million people in the GTA, we can spend the rest of our lives reaching these people by planting new churches." Rust feels Cornerstone will have the potential to grow as quickly as the Mississauga International Baptist Church has. "Oakville is growing rapidly, and we feel there is enough people to minister to. "Mississauga International Baptist Church started two years ago with 15 people and is now approaching close to 100 people." By April, the three feel confident that Cornerstone will be in a position to begin morning and evening services, a mid week Bible study group, and a number of family activities. A grand opening is also planned for April. For more information, call Cornerstone at 330-2378 or Mississauga International Baptist Church, 905-452-1919.
