Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a formal dinner at 7:30 p.m. Featured is a silent auction and entertainment by The Painted Horse. Black and white formal wear is requested. Tickets are $100 per person and seating is limited. Spearheaded by the Bronte Business Improvement Area (BIA) representing 175 local merchants, the Bronte Butterfly Millenium Project will see the land adjacent to Bronte Harbour developed into a unique butterfly-shaped summer theme garden with fountains and a flowing waterway that will convert into an artificial ice skateway in the winter. The Black Knights, formed in 1953, w ith players draw n from the Oakville, B urlington and Ham ilton area, captured the im agination and attention o f the town in the 5 0's and 60's. The "black" in the B lack K nights cam e from John Black, a star halfback who was paralyzed playing in a gam e for the B raves in 1949. Initially, the team was coached by Bob M cKay, form erly from the CFL, and later by Burlington native, Jack Rogers, and also by other CFL notables, including Bernie C ustis, Bill Zock, Fred Doty, Vince Scott and Gino Di Noble. Soon the team becam e a train in g ground for many who went on to play in the CFL, including B urlington's Peter D alla Riva, Mike Law, A1 Scholsser and Pete Wooley. "The Knights were a wellknit group," according to form er coach, Bob McKay, "and it's interesting that they still keep in touch 46 years after inception. This is the longest sports-affiliated association in O akville." The Black K night's golf tournam ent com m ittee includes many form er players o f the football team including Bob Bentley, Phil lightheart, Bill Rogers, A1 Schlosser and Jake Fennell. Next y ear's tournam ent will be held on the second Thursday in September. ((£ a r t, fa a .ia ' / The alum ni o f the O akville Black Knights, an am ateur football team that has been a part o f Oakville for over 46 years, raised $200 for the Alzheim ers Society of Halton/W entworth last m onth in their 6th annual golf tournament. The money was raised after the news of Dave Sm ith's hospitalization at Joseph Brant Memorial due to Alzheim ers disease. Smith, who taught at Appleby College for nearly 40 years, played with the Black Knights in 1954 and 1955. It later was learned that a form er coach, D ick Brown, also suffers from the incurable disease. Bunko artists at work Police in Milton and Oakville have investigated numerous reports over the last few weeks regarding the attempted personation of customers at local bank branches. In each case, the suspect attended the bank, which is the home branch of the victim and used counter cheques to with draw funds. Signatures of the suspect are a close match to that of the account holder, and the suspect has received cash in this fashion. The suspects are thought to have obtained the information such as account num bers, names, and sample signatures from the mail system. There have been several mail box thefts in Oakville, Acton, Burlington, and Milton over the last number of weeks.
