Oakville Fire is tops again, this time in extrication competition by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Oakville Fire Department has made its presence felt at yet another m ajor competition bringing home first and second place trophies following the 2017 National Extrication Challenge. The event took place late last month (Oct. 27-28) in Clearwater, Fla. and saw around 20 rescue teams from across North America compete to see who could best tackle scenarios in which a victim (or victims) needs to be rescued from a dam aged vehicle. "Well done Oakville Fire Auto Extrication Team on a fantastic competition in Florida," said Oakville Deputy Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault in a Tweet following the victory. First and Second place trophies "First and second place trophies! Congratulations!" Boissonneault said the competition's organizers set up a variety of scenarios and give the responding team no advanced notice of what challenges they will be facing. "They have to assess the scene and come up with the quickest and best m eans to do the extrication," said Boissonneault. "They have to secure the vehicle and provide the best m eans for patient extrication as well as vehicle stabilization. "There's a lot of very quick decision m aking necessary." The Oakville team came in first in the Limited Pit category in which the extrication speed w as the greatest factor. They came in second in the Best Technical category, which focused, not only on speed, but also on technique and the approach taken by the firefighters to the extrication. Every second counts a t an accident The deputy chief said firefighters com peting to be the best when it com es to vehicle extrication is im portant because every second counts at real accident scenes where people are trapped. "For our team to show how quickly they could safely assess som ething and remove a patient from that kind of challenge and be so technically sound, that should provide some fantastic levels of assurances for the people of Oakville," said Boissonneault. "Our team is extremely proficient in that kind of operation." The Oakville Fire Department's Auto Extrication Team includes Chad Roberts, Steve Sacchitiello, Paul Tur kalis, Marcel Perreault, Alex Jeffrey and Octavian Vlaicu.
