For story, see page 3. DREAM HOME COULD BE YOURS: After nine years as Oakville's MPP, Gary Carr finally has a change of wardrobe: the black attire of the new House Speaker of the 37th Parliament of Ontario. "I don't know if I look good, but I feel good," said the six-foot-three father of three. Carr was selected Wednesday after noon at Queen's Park soon after the House resumed business after the June 3rd election which saw the Mike Harris government returned to power. The election of a new Speaker is always the first agenda item on the first day of business. This is done through secret ballot, the only legislative vote not taken by merely a show of hands. Canpraised this system, which he maintained allows MPPs a free vote without having to follow party lines. "It was exciting, a very interesting process," said Can. Humble in accepting his win, C an thanked his wife Teresa and brother (and campaign manager) Mark Can, then told his fellow MPPs that it was "indeed an honour and a privilege" to be selected by them. "I've said to all of you that I'm going to have an open door policy. I've said to you I'm going to be accessible because I realize that even though I may be the ref eree in the House, that I am indeed the servant of the Members," C an said in his first moments as Speaker. "I will attempt to rule fairly to the best of my ability and I think the people of Ontario are expect ing many things of us here in the House." Votes were cast in ballot boxes set on the House Clerk Claude DesRosiers' table, after which they were counted. A winner is declared when a candidate has 50% of the votes, plus one. If not, the member with the least votes is dropped off the next ballot. With only two Members in the running - C an and Dufferin-Peel-Wellingto'n-Grey MPP Dave Tilson - the process ended after only a single ballot. Once the House adjourned Wednesday, C an was sworn in immedi ately as Speaker. On Thursday, C an assumed control of the Legislature in time for the Throne Speech by Lieutenant-Governor Hilary Weston.
