PAGE TWO For The Quiet Hour 'Hog Judge's Explain ' Guelph Slaughter Test m 1 Farmers’ Sales Notes TOTAL ASSETS OVER mom-mun MILLIONS d Bmagdflhamkinmdmfimsnc‘: 51mm BANK _ ... From The Canadian Gonntrymm. John Kelly, m. dawn In Guelph, especially since they are taking such an active part .in the campaign for better bacon hose. lei-cine Between Huge Smell. Says Ir. Jones. ' In reply to your inquiry of Janu- ary 9, re judging of bacon hogs at Guelph Winter Fair, permit me to say thaL in my opinion, the 'difl‘er- ence between the awards of live and dead hogs at Guelph is not at all confusing, when considered in the proper light. In the first place, we were judging a strictly high class product. where all the animals tormard were of ex- ceptionally high merit. Take, for instance. the twenty-five groups of four each. There was not an animal forward but what would class as Commercial No. 1 bacon hogs on carcases. Now, if you were to apply the score card on these groups you would find a very small margin be- tween any of the groups on exhibi- tion. I venture to say that they would all score from ninety-two to ninety-nine points Out of the possi- ble one hundred points. an these groups are judged alive, and all go forward to be slaughtered. Anyone acquainted with the live and dead meat trade, especitally bacon hogs, knows that while it is pussi- ‘nw. it was annmmcod in Winnipng last wm-k. If the v01» is favorable, the Legislature will convene latv in Jump and proclaim the bill. hlv. with certainty to toll whethvr an animal will make a No.1 carcaso, or nit-t. it is not. so easy to toll whether animals of high mm'it, which would scm'v. pussihly. from ninety-five to ninvty-vight. points aliw, will attain as pm‘fm‘t. a score" whim dead. "l‘hvsv aro facts that c'annot bv ig- nurml and must. hp reckoned with. and to my mind. when the margin hvtwomi tlw awards is v’ery small and thv (lvcision wry close. as was tho vasv with hnth live and dead hugs at Guolph. it is both possible and (fm‘iSiStan wa'thnut, reflection on anynno. fm- tho. awards in the car- casvs tn wry materially differ from thosu nf the live hogs. This is accounted for in, at. least. twn ditTerent, ways. In the first place. these hugs are all handled by the respective. breeders and exhibit- ors. They have. in be kept within ('t'l’taill weight limits. so that some are held a little and some are crowd- ed. during the last. few weeks pre- \‘lHUS t0 the exhibition. This meth- ml at handling hogs is always re.- fleeted more in the dead than the live animals. Then. again in the slaughter of all animals we. timl seine kill out. better than expected. others nut so well.
