Parliamentarians at IPU General Assembly calling lor equal opportunity for everyone continued from p.6 dem ocracy through political dialogue and concrete action. Parliamentarians from 155 countries have comm itted to pursuing cultural pluralism and peace through interfaith and inter-eth nic dialogue. At the Assembly's Standing Committee on D em ocracy and Human Rights, I presented amendments to improve our resolution on behalf of Canada, as well as the Forum for W omen Parliamentarians. Parliamentarians comm itted to working towards preventing discrimination and hu man rights violations related to religion and ethnicity, promoting national and local dia logue to create multicultural and inclusive societies, enhancing civic education, and strengthening parliaments. In a declaration issued at the close of the Assembly, IPU member parliaments called for transparency, accountability and respect for human rights and the rule of law to serve as the basis for building sustainable and peaceful diversity. Debates and discussions also took place on a wide range of issues, from the prohibition of nuclear weapons, to cyber-security, using science and research to achieve the highest health standards, engaging the private sector to help increase the use of renewable energy, and boosting the parliamentary dimension to the United Nations. W e also discussed issues of an emergency nature, including the Rohingya genocide, the political crisis in Venezuela and the threat to peace and international security posed by the nuclear tests conducted by North Korea. Our Canadian delegation held several bi lateral meetings, including a meeting with M exico to discuss NAFTA and meetings with China, Somalia, UK, Israel and others. I also had the opportunity to have conversa tions with parliamentarians from around the world to share ideas and best practices from our countries. As parliamentarians, we aspire to a world where each of us are equal and have equal opportunities. It was a privilege to represent m y country at the IPU as we com m it to standing up for democracy, justice and equality. 7 | Friday O ctober 2 7 , 2 0 1 7 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | w w w .insidehalton.com My NEXT H O U S EC H A L L E N G E IS CO M INGUP.
