"The research is pretty amazing at the moment. So much of the research for diabetes and the breakthroughs have come in Canada," said Jackson. "This to me, is sort of the closest I've seen to a cure, yet." Earlier this year, JDRF launched a $30-million joint venture with the federal government called the Partnership to Defeat Diabetes. The collaboration will see JDRF and the government each contributing $15 million to support vital clinical trials research that will "bring us closer to turning Type 1 to type none," Jackson said. She feels a cure for Type 1 diabetes could be found in her lifetime. "The change in the way the disease is managed is absolutely incredible. The developments have been so amazing. Most of them have to do with the care of diabetes, the management of diabetes," said Jackson. "I'm excited to think about things that actually lead me to not having to manage my diabetes and maybe to having my diabetes gone." The Starlight Soiree will also include a special recognition of Kristina Zietsma, JDRF' s volunteer community engagement and mentor chair for the Peel/Halton chapter. In addition to giving remarks, she will be honoured for her ongoing contribution to the organization. "I'm honoured to have the opportunity to speak about JDRF and what the benefits this organization has had for our family," said Zietsma, whose son, Jacob, 7, a JDRF youth ambassador, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2014. "Type 1 doesn't have to limit us in any way." In her current volunteer role, Zietsma works with JDRF to lead its mentor program, matching trained Type 1 advisers with newly-diagnosed families looking for emotional support. The Halton-based mother helped found a parents' support group for Jacob and others living with Type 1 diabetes. "Through JDRF, I've really found a lot of hope, in terms of connecting with other families who were able to show us the light at the end of the tunnel," said Zietsma. The Starlight Soiree takes place Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Doors open at 7 p.m. with cocktails and silent auction.
