The award was presented to Halton Region last Wednesday (Oct. 4 ) during a council meeting. Halton was one of several communities to donate a vehicle to Ambulances for Ukraine. Other communities included Oxford Country, the Counties of Prescott and Russell, the City of Saskatoon and Government of Canada. John Holuk, chair of the Ukrainian Cana dian Congress (U CC ) Ukraine Appeal and project manager of Ambulances for Ukraine, told council the remote villages of Ukraine are in dire need of medical aid. "We are very appreciative of your support," Holuk added. "Conflict continues on a daily basis." The Saskatchewan-Ukraine Relations Ad- visory Committee (SURAC) started Ambu lances for Ukraine in 2 0 1 5 in response to the critical need for high-tech medical ambulanc es created by Russia' s invasion of Ukraine in 2 0 1 4 and the resulting humanitarian crisis. Ambulances for Ukraine is now lead by the UCC Ukraine Appeal in partnership with Paramedic Chiefs of Canada. "The ambulance is being used, and being used effectively," said Holuk. Holuk said more than 4 0 remote communi ties now receive health care from the project' s fleet of 14 ambulances. Some of the ambulances serve as surgical clinics while others are used as mobile clinics in more remote areas. Some of the ambulances are being used as part of a melanoma preven tion campaign. While these decommissioned vehicles are no longer suitable for frontline service in Halton, a 2 0 1 6 regional staff report says the am bulances are extremely valuable when used in underprivileged nations and locally by com munity groups such as St. John Ambulance.
