The party followers of Mr. Ross even go so far as to find fault with Conser- vatives who supported the Referendum charging them with the motive of do- ing so “to put Ross in the hole.” Granted for the sake of argument that even some of them did do so, was it not a measure introduced by Mr. Ress himself, who during the campaign told his temperance friends that he had supported every scheme for, the advancement of temperance, and that he would support the Referendum “’21s it a crime for Conservatives to vote in support of a scheme that was submitt- ed by Mr. Ross? \Ve presume it was so in this case, and especially so as Mr. Ross himself took the same view of the situation to figuring up the results. Under the circmnstances it would be difficult to decide whether Mr. Ross himself supported the scheme on which he asked the people for an opinion. The temperance people are not easily I drawn into line thistime and the Pre- ‘ mier who kept: them on the string for a third of a century to serve his pur- poses will find many of them in opposi- tion to him this time. The plebescite and referendum are all played out, and in the latter farce Mr. Ross was forced to show his true colors. Mr. Ross is a temperance man‘ personally but po- litically he rode the temperance horse only so long as it suited his political purposes. He has betrayed the party hand the whole of them are not slow to resent his insults.
