Many Properties Busy at Elk Lake Around Elk Lake progress is Very encouraging. although there are no shippers like the Miller Lake Mines to make a backbone for the camp. The following mines have their plants installed and are working steadily: llitchcoek, Donaldson, Regal, Cobalt- l°‘rontenac, Moose llorn, Beacon and Bateese. Several others are getting ready and will be working in a short time. The first important. sale of mining property to be completed here since the l-litchcock sale last December, was consummated last week, when Frank Westcott gold two properties to Mr. Mellut'l', representing Montreal capital. These claims are situated in the township of Smyth. The same syndicate is likely to purchase two or three other elaims.in the same block and will work this summer. develop- ing the ground with a view to put- ting in a plant next fall. Considerable sales of Elk'l.ake realz estate are reported. A Montreal syndicate has bought about fifteen acres of the Welsh property and in- tends laying the ground out in town lots. The majority of the sales,how- ever, are of single or small groups of lots, and most of them are on the Government side of the river. No high prices are reported, but there seems to he a very steady demand. Buffalo Mine Goes to Gowganda The Buflalo Mines Company of Co- balt is entering Gowganda. A sale has just been completed of an interest in claimoG. G. 960, Gow- ganda, to the company. The claim is in the section from‘ which silver is being produced by the Mann mine and others, and the ad- vent of another strong company like the Buffalo interest in Gowganda is a welcome sign of the revived- inter- est being taken in this camp. The company will start immediate- ly to thoroughly prospect the pro- perty. Find on North Dome Important The new find made at the North Dome will doubtless .afiect the Tem- iskaming shareholders’ vote on the question of selling the property. ‘ 1n faces of the level at fifty feet, working from the two shafts,a splen- did body of ore has been struck, quartz in which shows free, gold. For over a. week now stringers of quartz have been encountered by the drills, and the development was not unexpected, but the high \‘alue‘of the ore disclosed is above expectations. j'l‘he ore now being brought out of Tthe workings is equal to any in the { camp. \‘o .5- Crown Chartered mine, is in the camp on a Visit of inspection of the property, which is now in excellene shape. The township council has before it a proposition to use the water from an abandoned working at the Foley- O'Brien. Some time ago a drift from the ltNi-iom lm-cl from one of the Foley- U'Brion shafts ran into a bed of gravel and through this there came finch an inrush of water that. tho { working had to be. abandoned. lortnnatvh it had no connection with the rvst of the mine and the loss is confined to a \cry small por- tion ul the ptuperly. The water, which is now ol consid- erable depth in the shalt. is of ex- cellent qualitygm umlergmuml spring having been tapped which, by filteru- tion through a deep-laying gravel bed, is well filtered and would form a splendid source of supply for the town. From its position it would he pus- sible to run the water through the town by gravitation and South Por- eupine will likely he indebted to the Foley-O'Brien for a good and cheap water supply. - I o ; .- "utâ€"w- ""l'r'd‘ The subject came up for lH'lCl dis- cussion Monday night at a upecial meeting of the South l'un-uipine Board of '1‘ rade, during which Messrs. Homer Gibson and A. C. Brown re- ported that they had visited the Foley-O'Brien and found the water excellent, with a capacity of at least seventy-live thousand gallons per day, suflicient to all the needs of the town. Steps will at once be taken tu utilize this line body of water. and the management 0! the Fuley-U'Brien are to be congratulated on the gen- erous manner in which they have dealt with the matter. At a meeting in Toronto attended by several prominent scientists and transportation gentlemen, '1‘. ll. llogg, B.A.Sc., editor of The Cana- dian Engineer, said the operating cost of the gas-electric car compares very fawrably with the electric trol- ley, and ,there seems to be no reason whythere should not be a widespread use for these cars in Canada. “For suburban service and for building up feeder and branch lines their use is amply justified, and there ‘is no doubt, now that the car has been developed to a high state of ef- ficiency, that other roads than the Canadian Northern will see the ad- vantages of their use. The cost of operation, I understand, including all maintenance charges, roadbed, etc., averages about eighteen to twenty cents per car mile, although on one line in the United States the opera- tion costs have been reduced to about elevel cents per car mile." When such facts are in the hands of the public it seems reasonable to .presume that the T. 6t N. 0'. railway will before long be operating a gas- electric car on the run from Form- pine at the north end to 'l‘imniins, and indeed from Cochrane to Tim- mins. No Fake Pictures of Titanic Wreck Proprietors of mOVing picture shows in Toronto and Detroit have. been warned by the Police Depart~ ment that films portraying the wreck of‘the Titanic cannot be exhibited in these cities. “Public feelling should not be har- rowed by ‘fuke' pictures," said Po- lice Captain Baker of Detroit. “Such exhibitions would be a menace to public puave, health, and safety." H. A. Morrow and J. A. Beanie left here on Saturday for Montreal. Messrs. Beanie and Morrow are en- gineers, who were inspecting the Waiwaitin Falls and the situation there for the syndicate that has pur- chased the interest of the Wallbelgs. They spent a day at the falls \iuw- ing the progress that has been made towards the instailation of the power plant. s-Electric Car Is Money-Maker
