V Friday, October 29, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 29 Photographs are already part o f history (Continued from page 28) On his return to the fence, five months after shooting it, James said, "I became aware of how transitory and shifting this landscape is. A second fence of concrete pillars is replacing the already rusting sheet steel. Intensified electronic surveil lance has effectively cut off those who cross at the western sector. The 24-hour crossing supplies tent has disappeared. The pictures have already become "history", though I hope that this will in no way diminish their potential to engage the viewer's moral imagination." James was born in Wales in 1942 and studied modern history at Oxford University prior to coming to Canada. He worked as a journalist and critic before focusing on photography, at age 40. His past work has captured such subjects as an asbestos mining landscape in Quebec, panoram ic Renaissance gardens, Utopian architectural projects in 18th century France and ancient Roman roads. Running Fence is on view at Centennial Gallery until Dec. 5th. James will be launching a new book featuring these black-and-white images, on Saturday, Nov. 27th at Art Metropole on King Street in Toronto. K -V P h o to by P eter J.
