THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday November 3, 1999 V? Sheridan College receives $240,000 from Millennium Bureau for facility opening Next y ear's "G reat Canadian Animation and M ultim edia Celebration" at Sheridan College can now proceed with all its festivities intact, thanks to this week's substantial funding from the Millennium Bureau of Canada. The money - $239,700 under the federal governm ent's M illennium Partnership Program - represents more than 25% o f the total $900,000 budget set aside to celebrate the opening of the Sheridan Centre for Animation and Emerging Technologies (SCAET). According to Ronald Holgerson, Executive Director of Communications and International Services, festivities surrounding SCAET's September 2000 opening would have taken place regardless of any funding shortfall, but expectations may have been down sized. The M illennium Bureau money, though, ensures production of Sheridan's ambitious six-part Canadian Millennium television series. `T h is brings it to an entirely new level," said Holgerson. "Without this funding we couldn't possibly have pro ceeded." The celebration will focus on Canadians working in the multimedia field through a series of events, includ ing an Animation Retrospective, a Digital Media Innovations Conference and the TV series. "We look forward to a major cele bration of Canadian creativity in con cert with the opening of (SCAET)," said Sheridan College president Sheldon Levy. "It's a wonderful way to mark the new millennium and we appreciate the support of our local Member of Parliament and the federal government in making this possible." The TV series will allow six Sheridan graduates - working as producers/directors with fellow grads and students - to create a six one-hour pro grams based on the themes of the Millennium Partnership Program. The programs will be completed by August 2000 then premiered during the open ing of SCAET. TVOntario has committed to includ ing the programs in its broadcast sched ule and as part of its elementary, sec ondary and post secondary curriculum content. The Animation Retrospective will feature a week-long celebration of Canadian animation films, including historical and current works and more. The Digital M edia Innovations Conference will bring together Canadian and international researchers in the fields of animation, film and tele vision production, 3-D visualization, HDTV, digital journalism, virtual reali ty and related disciplines over a four day period.
