1 3 | Friday October 20, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER |www.insidehalton.com Liam's Brigade takes Monster March downtown Oct. 22 by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville' s little Tnonsters' and their families will once again take to the streets of Downtown Oakville on Oct. 22 to support Liam Cutde and to scare away childhood cancer. The local youth has been fighting neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, since 2014 when he was just three years old. Since his diagnosis, Liam and his family and friends, who are known as Liamfe Brigade, have hosted an annual Halloween Monster March in Downtown Oakville. The event, which sees young children and the families, parade through the streets in their Halloween costumes, supports research into neuroblastoma treatment and has so far raised nearly $100,000 for the SickKids Foundation. They have set a goal of raising $50,000 for this year. At the time of his diagnosis, Liam was given a 50 per cent chance of survival. Today his mother, Heather Anderson-Cuttle, says Liam is in remission and is doing amazing. "He has so much energy," she said. "He' s playing hockey, baseball. He' s doing gymnastics lessons, swimming lessons. If he' s not at school he is out in our driveway playing hockey constantly." Liam will celebrate his seventh birthday on Oct. 26. Liam Cuttle, as a to t and later as an elementary school-ager, has always had a love of firefighters that has helped him through his battle with neruoblastoma. Liam's Brigade, made up of his family and friends, will once again take his birthday/Halloween monster march to the streets downtown in support of finding a cure for neuroblastoma. | Metroland Media file photos "In 2014 we weren't sure he would ever get to this day," said Heather. "It' s a little milestone we appreciate, more than any parent probably." During his treatment Liam showed great courage, wearing his firefighter costume to each session. His mother says he has yet to decide what costume he will wear at this year' s Monster March. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with the actual Monster March happening shortly after 2 p.m. Parents and kids will meet at the Towne Square, 9 4 George St. The event will also feature games, photos, balloons and fun for the whole family Heather said it is important people keep fighting not just for Liam, but all children facing the specter of childhood cancer. "We feel blessed. Our son was given less than a 50 per cent chance of survival and we still have him today," she said. "We know a lot of other families getting diagnosed now They are facing the same challenges and it really is a brutal standard of care to get to remission. We want to help find an easier way for these kids through the research. We still want to give back, we still want to help other people because we know exacdy what they are going through." The Monster March drew considerable attention last year when a balloon bearing the event' s logo broke free and floated all the way to Saint John, New Brunswick where Liamfe grandmother is buried. At the time Heather noted that while the strange occurrence had thrown all the adults around him for a loop Liam was not surprised. He had a close relationship with his grandmother, said Heather, so to him it made sense the balloon would make its way to her.
