Halton police will soon become the first police service in Canada to adopt a dedicated public safety wireless network. Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah announced today (Oct. 17) that Halton police would be teaming up with Motorola Solutions to create the separate LTE network for first responders only. Duraiappah said the reason for creating this new system is simple. When commercial networks are slow for members of the public they are slow for police as well, which is a major problem in a digital age where so much of the critical information officers require comes from their vehicle computer. The problem also becomes amplified during major public events or certain emergencies. "At the Sound of Music Festival you will have 220,000 people down in Spencer Smith and we've had a child go missing and we've tried to circulate a photo on our police phones and computers and it is just not possible," said Duraiappah. "We had a fire at Burloak and Harvester earlier this year. It was a rooftop fire at an office tower and we had to evacuate the whole building. Everyone leaving the building was calling loved ones or tweeting about it because it was a pretty spectacular fire and as a result our officers who were setting up a perimeter and helping with the evacuation were not able to transmit through their computers." Police had similar problems during the train derailment in Burlington in 2012. Duraiappah said the federal government, in collaboration with Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, the Paramedic Chiefs of Canada and others, began developing a solution to this problem back in 2014 by making portions of the radio spectrum exclusively available to first responders. Halton police will be the first in Canada to take advantage of this change. Duraiappah said there were multiple reasons why police in Canada took so long to make use of this radio spectrum. One reason is the complicated nature of creating the necessary infrastructure and the cost involved. see System on p.5 LEXUSOF OAKVILLE 1453 NORTH SERVICE ROAD, WEST OAKVILLE, ON L6M 2W2 9 0 5 . 8 4 7 . 8 4 0 0 · 1 . 8 6 6 .
