The Town of Oakville is calling on local students to help improve community cycling and walking routes. Through funding from the Ontario 150 Community Capital Program, the Town of Oakville is launching the "It's Your 150! High School Challenge" and is asking students to help the Town learn where the best places are to improve bike paths, crosswalks and other routes around the community. The Town is looking for volunteer team leaders who will encourage other students to track their routes to and from school using a running and cycling app. Participation will help these leaders earn up to 50 of their required community service hours. "By volunteering and becoming an `It's Your 150!' Team Leader, students can have a positive, fun experience, support their school, and have the opportunity to complete all of their community volunteer hours," said Chris Clapham, Sustainable Transportation Program Coordinator with the Town of Oakville. "Students will build skills in public speak- high school students to help ing, social media communications and health promotion- great things to have on a resume." The Town has four volunteer team leader positions available at every high school to be filled on a first come, first served basis. Town staff will be visiting high schools throughout October to promote the program and recruit volunteers. Students don't have to become a team leader to take park in the `It's Your 150! High School Challenge.' The Town is encouraging every high school student to sign up online and track their trips to and from school to help the Town improve community cycling and walking routes. Every student who signs up will qualify for exciting prizes including a bike draw. For more information or to register visit www.oakville.ca/townhall/its-your-150.html.
