An officer said they would bring down a police legal representative to speak to her outside the room. "You are all causing a disruption (to the meeting), not I," she told the officers speaking to her. After a somewhat tense and unusual five minutes, the woman left the room with an officer. "I saw a valid trespass order. I hope she can deal with her situation successfully," Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, chair of the police services board, told those in the room. During a break in the meeting called by Burton as the situation unfolded, Halton Police Chief Steven Tanner admitted being taken aback by the development. Tanner said he thought it was part of the de escalation presentation but Sandy assured him it was not and that he was as surprised as the chief with what unfolded. Duraiappah said after the meeting that the woman left the property voluntarily soon after she left the meeting room. He said he did not know the woman or her situation when he showed her a seat during the meeting. When the meeting resumed, Sandy told those assembled he did not arrange the incident but that it was coincidental timing to his presentation and that he thought de-escalation of the situation was "a great example" of what can happen and was handled well by the officers involved. 7 |Thursday October 5, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER |www.insidehalton.com A Halton Regional Police presentation on scene containment and de-escalating public confrontations became relevant in real time at last weeks police services board meeting. While Staff-Sgt. Jeff Sandy, manager of the service' s training bureau, addressed members of the Halton police services board, as well as the chief and deputy chiefs of police, at police headquarters, during his talk on de-escalation a member of the public watching the proceedings created a bit of a stir. An older woman who entered the community room at police headquarters with a metal carrier cart during Sandy' s talk was shown to a front row seat in the public gallery by Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah. Soon after, an officer came into the room to talk to the woman. He told her she had to leave saying she was not allowed to be there as there was a trespass order against her forbidding her from being on municipal property within Oakville. The woman politely refused to leave saying it was a public meeting and that she was a member of the public. Within minutes three or four officers surrounded the woman with one asking her to step into the hallway to sort the matter out. 12' x 24' RECT 14' x 28' R e ct $999 1 6 'x 3 2 'R e c t $1,099 * $899 HOT TUBS FREE INSTALLATION* FROM 18' x 36' R e ct $1,399 2 0 ' x 4 0 'R e ct $1,599 I NSTALLED REPLACEMENT POOL L in e r s * f r e e in sta llatio n * 12' x 24' , 1 V. - $5499* I N STA LLED $1999 14'x 16'x 18'x 20' x 2 8 '$ 2 ,3 9 9 3 2 '$ 2 ,6 9 9 3 6 '$ 2 ,9 9 9 40' $ 3 ,4 9 9 I NSTALLED 504 IROQUOIS SHORE ROAD, UNIT #1, OAKVILLE, ON L6H 3K4 905-815-5252 www.leisureindustries.ca *Lim itedT im eO ffer, N oD ealers P lease, Q u an tities L im ited .R estrictionap p ly .C h eck- instore for d etails.
