The Oakville Soccer Club has ex panded its technical department with two new hirings. The club, which has more than 12,000 members, has added Ga reth Davies as manager of grass roots programs and Mark Worton as director of coach development. "We are extremely pleased to bring on two people who are as accomplished as Gareth and Mark," said OSC executive direc tor Dave Harris. "Their expertise in every facet of youth soccer in cluding grassroots programming and coaching development makes them an excellent fit for the tech nical department and OSC as a whole." Davies will oversee all aspects of the club's grassroots program ming, including the advanced development, open development and house league programs. Before moving to Canada in 2011, Davies coached in England with Walsall EC. in League One. After moving to Canada, he joined RVDL Academy, where as assis tant academy director he founded Advantage Soccer, where he cre ated and implemented technical development plans. Worton joins OSC in a full-time role after more than 20 years of in volvement with the club. Worton will work with the more 900 vol unteer and professional coaches at the club. Worton has worked with On tario Soccer as a coaching educa tor, delivering clinics throughout the province. Worton is also an Ontario Premier Development League scout and Team Ontario coach as well as the current head coach of the University of Water loo men's soccer team. That game, played last night (Wednesday) af ter the Beaver press deadline, was against Woodbridge at Bronte Athletic Eield. The Blue Devils advanced to within a draw of the title with a 4-0 win over shorthanded Sanjaxx last weekend. Forward Israel Perrin of Sanjaxx was red-carded in the second minute of the game, but Oakville could manage only one goal through 69 minutes with the man advantage. "It affected our rhythm for a little while and made us readjust," said Blue Devils head coach Duncan Wilde. "We went to play 3-5-2 and it took us a while to get our rhythm but we scored our goal and were good value for it. We could have been 4-0 or 5-0 by halftime after hitting the post and missing a couple good chances. There was a little bit of anxiety I think. We have had some tough games of late and we just want to knock off the end of the season point by point." Braden Culver opened the scoring in the 26th minute and teammates Anthony Novak, Stephen Ademolu and Eelipe Vilela all connected in the last 20 minutes of play. The Sanjaxx Lions kept Oakville on its toes for much of the first half, forcing lapses in concentra tion at both ends of the pitch at crucial moments. Oakville outshot Sanjaxx by a wide margin, but struggled around the enemy goal. Sanjaxx's assistant coach Devon Porter said in experience caught up with his squad. "In the second half, things fell apart because we have young guys, they tired, and when you tire the brain doesn't click as much," he said. "They are young, but they will learn." Oakville found its edge in the second half, No vak finishing a penalty, Ademolu initiating and finishing another drive, and Vilela smashing solo effort from the edge of the box. If Oakville and East Division leader Woodbridge both picked up at least a point last night, they'll win their respective divisions and meet for the 2017 Leaguel Ontario championship. The Blue Devils went into Wednesday's game with 55 points, which is the highest number of points second-place Sigma can gain with two vic tories in its last two games.
