www.insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 29, 2017 | 6 EDITORIAL | OPINION Helpstudentsgive povertyafailinggrade The assignment is almost due. The Halton Learning Foundation (H LF) set out to raise $10,000 at the start of school this m onth to ensure all students can participate fully in school this year. The m onth is almost over. HLF is a registered charity that supports the stu dents and schools of the Halton District School Board (HDSB). All donations over $15 are eligible for a tax receipt. Recently, the HDSB sent out a call for help through the HLF. It said that with help, every student can fully participate in school this year. The transition back to classes can be difficult for some students and is often more so for the estimated one in 10 students in Halton public schools, who can not afford the basic supplies they need to start the year off right. W ith your help, the HLF can help remove these barriers to learning for students facing extraordinary or emergency fnancial challenges. Here' s an example of how support for a student can help: · $200 helps purchase a winter coat or running shoes for gym class · $35 provides a student with school supplies · $20 ensures a student can participate in a field trip According to the HLF Executive Director Lesley Mansfield, the majority of students who receive sup port come from a family where one or both parents are working. "The high cost of housing in Halton, low-paid work and unexpected events like illness or accidents can af fect a family' s income to the point where parents can no longer afford to buy their children new shoes or send them on a school trip," Mansfield said. "W e don't want kids in our community to give up on their education and the opportunity for a better future because they are unable to fully participate in school," said Mansfield. Contributions of any amount are welcome and all donations stay in Halton to help ensure students in a school or in their community feel included. Helping out is easy. Dealing with poverty is not. Stu dents should not have to shoulder that burden. To help, donate online at haltonlearningfoundation. ca, or call 9 0 5 -335-3665, ext. 3 4 0 8 or 3 388 to make a donation. Even a small gift can make a difference to a student in need. W ith the right tools, there' s no limit to how far our students can go, and with our help, students do not need to face limits.
