In the past five years, there has been an overall increase of six per cent in writing within the Halton public board. In Grade 6 math, results increased by one percentage point to 57. The provincial average remains unchanged in Grade 6 math at 50 per cent. While the board is pleased with the overall EQAO results, it acknowledges the need for improvement, particularly in math. "While the news is good, we do recognize we have work to do; specifically, junior math is an area of (potential) growth, as it is for school boards across Ontario," said Halton board superintendent of education Tina Salmini. "The province has initiated a renewed math strategy and our board' s mathematics improvement plan is aligned with it. This will remain a key focus for our board over the next several years," she added. The plan includes a focus on math leadership across the board, professional learning to support teachers in math instruction and assessment, and an investment in high-quality resources and training for those resources in every school. The EQAO is an independent agency that says it measures quality, fosters improvement and contributes to accountability in the publicly-funded education system. "For each school and board there are patterns that emerge through EQAO data on student achievement in reading, writing and mathematics, Norah Marsh, Chief Executive Officer of EQAO, said in a press release. "These data, along with other information, such as that in report cards and teachers' observations, can provide school communities the basis for the interventions necessary for all students to succeed. Schools' EQAO results are an additional source of information to support the work of teachers and educators," Marsh added.
