D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 17,1999 Blades lose close 4-3 verdict to Raiders Friday night By Matt Nimmo SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Blades fell just short, 4-3, to the Georgetown Raiders in Junior A hockey action last Friday night. The Blades were in action last night in Streetsville but that game went beyond our press deadlines. The Blades road streak continues this Friday in Burlington and next Tuesday in Bramalea as they have a rare dark weekend at Ice Sports Oakville. They're back home the following weekend, hosting Hamilton on Friday, Nov. 26 (7:30 p.m.) and Bramalea on Sunday, Nov. 28 (7:15 p.m.) at Ice Sports Oakville. The momentum in last Friday's game was fast and furious, with numer ous chances for goals from both clubs. Blades' coach John McDonald was not impressed with his team's lack of intensity. "We only played 40 minutes of hockey. We took the second period off." Both goalies put on a great game, with Raiders' goalie Jeff Hladysh mak ing some key saves throughout. Blades' goalie Matt Violin would not be outdone. He made some great saves to keep his Blades in the game the whole night. The Raiders got started early, scor ing six minutes into the first period. Oakville would answer with a goal from Will Barlow. Barlow, a call-up from the Blades' affiliate, the Stoney Creek Spirit, received a cross-ice pass from Adam The Blades' Eugene Repa in action against Georgetown Friday night. The Blades were edged 4-3. Photo by Peter J. Thompson First w in o f the season is a big one over Bram pton After a slow start to the season, the M inor Atom AA Oakville Rangers came out strong against Brampton with a 9-2 victory for their first win of the season. Scoring for Oakville were: Jordan Macintosh with a hat trick and 3 assists; Jamie Mackenzie with 2 goals and 2 assists; Gary Browne, Aaron Mirsky, Mark White and Brett Runciman each had a goal with assists going to Mirsky (2), Runciman, Browne, Chris Hill, Jonathan Lee and Daniel Aziz. In other action, the Rangers managed a 2-2 tie with Orangeville. Mark Friesen and Brett Runciman scored the goals with Mackenzie and Lee getting the assists. Outstanding goaltending by Liam (See 'Minor atom AA' page D3) Gower. It was Barlow's first goal in the Junior A league. Tied 1-1 in the second period, the Raiders scored on the power-play and added another to give them a 3-1 lead. Stu MacCrimmon closed the margin to 3-2 when he cut across the offensive zone and slipped the puck through a screened Hladysh. Georgetown maintained some heavy pressure near the end of the second frame, but Violin would not let the puck get in the net. The Raiders scored the eventual game-winner early in the third, giving them a 4-2 lead. Gavin Milligan then got the Blades within one again, at 4-3, when the rebound off his slapshot re directed off a Raiders' skate and into the net. Oakville pulled their goalie late in the period but could not generate quali ty chances with the man advantage. Coach McDonald was pleased with the play of Bob Jaggard, and also for Barlow, who scored his first goal. The Raiders had two goals from Mike Knoepfli, and singles from Dane Dainard and Jeff Seeds. Assists went to Scott McDonald (2), Joe Tenute (2), Knoepfli, Bill Fetherston, Tristan Fairbam, and Stace Page. The Blades had goals from Barlow, MacCrimmon and Milligan. Helpers were provided by Barlow, Gower, Steve Kinnunen, Mike Tarantino, Rob Kapuscinski and Mike Porter.
