The local charity will hold a food drive, which will run from Saturday (Sept. 23) to Monday (Oct. 9), in the hopes of making the Thanksgiving season a time when all Oakville residents have reason to be thankful -- regardless of their situation. There is no shortage of need for the food bank's services with the Halton Poverty Roundtable noting that poverty affects one in 10 Halton residents including 11,120 children. Fare Share organizers say they needed to help 109 new families in 2016. According to its website, it currently serves 350 to 400 families (approximately 1,200 people) per month. Food for the food drive can be dropped off at all Oakville grocery stores, at all Oakville fire stations and directly at the food bank, which is located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6. Monetary donations are also appreciated and charity tax receipts can be written immediately. Organizers say the food bank is in desperate need of: · Baby cereal (Pablum) · Powdered baby formula · Infant: junior jars of meat, fruit and vegetables They also pointed out that for the first time in memory they have completely run out of basics such as canned corn, peas, mixed vegetables and fruit. They are also looking for canned Nancy Bromberg of the Fare Share Food Bank sorts donations at the Speers Road food bank, which is gearing up to kick off its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, which runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 9. | Metroland file photo meat and fish products along with jam, tea bags, instant coffee and powdered laundry detergent. In short, organizers say the shelves of the Oakville Fare Share Food Bank are becoming bare and they are counting on the help and support of the people of Oakville to restock. The food bank receives no funding from any level of government and relies completely on the community so it can keep doing its important work.
