But instead, his family is planning his funeral after the young Peel Regional Police officer was one of two people killed in a single-vehicle crash in south Mississauga on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 9. He is the son of Peel police Staff Sgt. James Kettles. One officer, who asked not to be named, described Kettles as "a great cop and a great person" who worked in 11 Division. Peel police have said an off-duty officer was the driver of the vehicle in the deadly accident in the area of Lakeshore Road West and Avonhead Road, near Lakeside Park and not far from the Oakville border. The officer and the passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Police have not released the ages or the genders of the two passengers. It appears the vehicle rolled and ended up near some trees off the road. "It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we learn of the death of one of fellow officers," Peel Police Chief Jennifer Evans said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and both other families impacted by this tragic event. The flags will now fly at half-mast out of respect for our fallen friend." Kettles was also a piper and had a passion for playing bagpipes. He was with the Lorne Scots Regiment and led the official party that brought the Memorial Cup, the most coveted prize in junior hockey, to Mississauga in 2011. The service has asked Toronto police to conduct the investigation due to "the far-reaching and deeply felt impact this tragedy will have across the Peel Regional Police Service," said a news release issued Saturday afternoon.
