40 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, November 7, 1999 Tourney silver medalists The Philthy McNasty's/Nottinghill Chiropractic Oakville Hornets Intermediate A girls rep hockey team took the Silver Medal at the 1999 Beatrice Aeros Tournament over the Oct. 15th to 17th weekend at York University Ice Gardens. Oakville earned the silver medal losing a closely contested final game to Niagara Falls 1-0 in the dying minutes of the game. Oakville had lost to Niagara Falls in earlier round-robin play 3-0. Oakville had come from behind throughout the tournament but despite a feverish effort in the dying seconds could not tie the score to force overtime. It was the newly formed team's first tournament after the summer break heralding an excellent beginning to the 1999-2000 season. The game was very close with no scoring throughout the first and second periods, despite a strong offensive effort by all three Oakville lines. There were repeated opportunities by Tara Roszell, Heidi Kearney, Kendal Hase, and Devon Middleton. All were thwarted by the strong Niagara Falls goaltender. Anne-Marie Witko backstopped Oakville with a period-and-a-half of shutout goaltending. Laura Roadhouse took over in net and was able to hold off a surging Niagara Falls attack until, with overtime looming in the final min utes of the third period, Niagara Falls took the lead and the win. Oakville opened the tournament Oct. 15th against Michigan Parkside with a 4-2 win. Jordana Lee had a pair of goals with singles added by Katharine Bingham and Heidi Kearney in the empty net. Assists went to Jennifer Cutter (2), Heather Macdonald, Charlene Hare and Tara Roszell. The second game of the tournament Saturday afternoon was the 3-0 loss against Niagara Falls. In the third game, Oakville defeated Guelph 5-3. Goals were scored by Devon Middleton, Charlene Hare, Heidi Kearney, Jordana Lee and Jennifer Cutter into the empty net. Assists went to Jordana Lee (3), Kim Schneider (2) and Emily Meeking (2). A strong defen sive effort by Jennifer Murray and Nicole Crawford and Jennifer Kociuba. · S E E SP O R T S F R O N T PHOTO The road to the national championships The Oakville Skating Club has a sizeable contingent o f national stream skaters, led by veteran Sean Rice and his longtime senior pairs partner Jodeyne Higgins of Stratford. The two have appeared in two world championships, finishing 10th and 14th, and numerous national champi onships, including last year's where they finished fifth. The club's only national stream competitors in the pairs event, they were absent from the two group shots (on the previous page), although they are certainly no strangers to the sports pages of the Oakville Beaver. The remaining skaters are divided between the freeskate competitors and the dance duos, o f which Oakville has a good number. Both the pairs and dance duos begin their national championship pursuits next weekend (Nov. 1214th) at Mississauga IceLand at the Central Ontario Sectionals, as do the men's freeskate competitors. The women's freeskate competi tors, however, kicked off their national championship pursuits last weekend at the subsectionals. O akville had one competitor, Ashleigh Lockwood, advance (see results). Last year, O akville had three dance duos reach nationals, all in the novice division ... Oakville's Julie MacDonald and her Newmarket dance partner, Michael Fawcett, collected a silver medal. Oakville Skating Club member Debbie Allworth and her partner Jon Lane from Scarborough finished in sixth place. And Oakville's Stacey Vernon and her partner Brian Adams from the Kitchener Waterloo club finished in 14th place (they skated out of the Kitchener Waterloo Club in the west ern divisional). In the freeskate, Tim Hewitt also made nationals in the novice division two years ago. · SE E SPORTS F R O N T PHOTOS CENTRAL ONTARIO SECTIONALS (schedule at Iceland A rena M ississauga, Nov. 12-14th) FR E E SK A TE Juvenile m en: ERIC VON HAGEN ... rink tw o, Fri., Nov. 12, 9 :45 p.m. Novice Ladies: ASHLEIGH LOCKWOOD ...
