38 Oakville Beaver Weekend Sunday, November 7, 1999 TRAVEL & ENTERTAINMENT P e a c e o f m i n d v ita l t o v a c a tio n p l a n s The weak Canadian dollar has n't phased Canadian snowbirds. According to the Conference Board of Canada, a record 480,000 Canadian seniors plan to make the annual migration to the sun this winter. This includes close to one-half of Canadians in the 55 to 64 age group and 40% of the over 65 age group. As with all extended travel, proper advance planning is the key to success for snowbirds. The travel experts at Ontario Blue Cross offer the following tips designed to ensure worry-free travel this winter. · Arrangements and Accommodations -- Booking your travel arrangements and accommodations well in advance will enable you to plan the most cost-effective trip. Check out the variety of travel magazines, the travel section of your local news paper and websites to research your destination, airfare, hotel, rental cars, and local attractions. · Health Insurance -- Make sure you have out-of-country health insurance coverage. You may require supplementary cov erage to your existing policy, so it's important to research different travel health plans in advance of your trip, as they vary in price and coverage. Without sufficient insurance coverage, an out-ofcountry accident or illness can be financially devastating. Be sure the insur er you choose offers high-quality emer gency medical assistance, including a toll-free 24-hour help line and repatria tion to Canada benefit service in the event of serious illness or accident. · Paying Bills -- Pay all outstanding bills in advance and arrange to have all incoming bills forwarded to you or paid by someone else. The Internet and auto mated banking have also made paying bills fast and efficient. Without sufficient insurance cover age, an out-of-country accident or illness can be financially devastating. · Managing Investments -- For financial issues, speak with your finan cial adviser to determine the best way to manage your money and investments while away. · Cash -- Take travellers cheques in case of emergency, but automated teller machines (ATMs) are widely available and eliminate the need to carry excess cash. ATMs also tend to provide a better currency exchange rate. · Prescriptions and Identification -- Bring copies of any prescriptions, such as eyeglasses and medications, as well as passports, credit cards, and any other important documents. Be sure to keep them in a different location from your actual prescriptions and identifications, in case of lost or stolen luggage. It's also wise for a family member back home to have a copy of important documents, including your power of attorney, will, and travel arrangements. · Housekeeping -- Cancel your newspapers and have someone pick up your mail on a regular basis. In case of emergency, leave a set of your house keys with a family member or neighbour. In addition, lower the heat and turn off the water heaters to save energy, and be sure to make snow removal arrange ments. -- Submitted by Anne Dimon, a free lance travel writer who serves as travel spokesperson fo r Ontario Blue Cross.
