And she'll get a chance to confirm her top ranking at the first women's amateur world box ing championships which are slated to be held next year in the United States. With few local competitors around to give either of them the tough con stant challenge they need for their elite events, they do regularly spar with each other. Sayer also benefits from some of the club's other elite members, for instance sparring with Pan Am silver medalist Zaya Younan, 31, who boxes in the 126 pound weight class. And he's sparred with Allan Hutton, current Ontario champion and former Canadian champion in the 132 pound class. DOMENIC FILANE As coach Ryan happily watches the troops go through their paces, includ ing Sayer, conversation shifts to twotime Olympian Domenic Filane. Thanks to some bad luck, Filane's hopes for a berth into a third Olympic Games has boiled down to one last chance -- a meet in Argentina which the Canadian team leaves for on May 27. That's because he dropped his opening bouts at the previous two zone Olympic qualifiers (involving all of north and south America) which were recently held in Florida and Mexico. "He had a lousy draw -- it could n't get any worse," said coach Ryan, wearing his national team hat. The Alfield oldtimers soccer club, a non profit organization for men over 35, j s going to represent Oakville this October in a week long soccer tournament in Budapest, Hungary. The club's sponsor, Alfield Industries, is covering half the cost while the players are busy fundraising to help cover the other half. At the first Olympic box-off in Mexico, Filane drew tough Romero Liberio, the top or at very least second top challenger. "Just a little bit missing that day -- just a touch off," summed up Filane. "We're improving with every fight. I'm fighting the best boxing of my life right now and just not getting the W 's, just falling short." If he can keep it up in Argentina, he maintains, "there'll be no prob lem." Of course, with Filane's luck, he's liable to draw the third ranked fighter this time around. "With my luck, yeah," responded Filane with a chuckle. But without missing a beat, quickly adds ... "But we're going to be ready to beat number three -- there's no prob lem there.
