On Thursday (July 20) at around 6:30 p.m ., Dave Whatmore was in the backyard of his Cumnock Crescent home, enjoying dinner with his wife Jeanette, when he realized something was wrong with his long-haired miniature Dachshund, Guinness. "All of a sudden w e heard this terrible, terrible scream from the dog," recalled Whatmore. "The yard is large. I jumped up and ran in the direction he was and that' s w hen I saw the coyote. The coyote actually had Guinness, but let him go and jumped back over the fence when it saw me com ing." Whatmore said Guinness was badly injured with severe bite wounds to his back. He quickly wrapped the ff-year-old canine in a blanket to stop the bleeding and drove him to the Mississauga-Oakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital on Bristol Circle. So far Guinness has had three operations and a blood transfusion. He remains at the veterinary hospital, but now appears to be on the road to recovery. "Each day he' s getting better.. .We visit Dave Whatmore and his dog Guinness. Guinness was seriously injured after being mauled by a coyote on July 20. He has endured three operations and is expected to survive. | Dave Whatmore photo h im .. .The last three nights w e' ve taken him cheese treats. He' s lying down in a cage and as soon as he hears our voices he starts to wag his tail," said WTratmore. "If w e were in the house w hen this happened, I doubt he w ould have survived." Whatmore said he has reported the attack to the Town and the Oakville Milton Humane Society (OMHS), voicing concerns about possible future attacks on pets or even a small child. The long-time resident says it' s clear what needs to be done. "It' s time they were destroyed," he said. "Something really needs to be done to control them. You can' t just let them continue to breed and m ultiply... I'm fortunate, I'm able to afford this vet bill, but it is going to be thousands of dollars." In an email to Whatmore, the Town' s Senior Environmental Policy Analyst Donna Doyle noted while coyotes generally do not pose a safety risk to people they do see pets, including small dogs, as a source of food. She said this is particularly true at this time of year w hen coyotes have pups and are looking for extra food. The Town is continuing to remind all residents not to leave their pets outside unattended, even in backyards, in areas where coyotes are known to be present. see Vet on p.5 A u t h e n t ic M o n t e s s o r i a t its B e s t - F o r A g e s 1 8 m o .- 1 2 y r s . · An empowering curriculum that engages children · Individual focus to define your child's learning · Community atmosphere that makes students feel included and valued · Creative expression allows your child to explore their own interests and talents Bhandari Fam ily Dentistry returns to Oakville BRING IN YO UR FAM ILY FO R A CHECK-UP A TO UR NEW M ODERN CLINIC Dr. Bhandari is an advocate of oral health with 31 years of experience.
