27 |Thursday August 3, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER |www.insidehalton.com " Connected toyourCommunity" Milton farm owner digs in to build newsite for Mudmoiselle by Steve LeBlanc Metroland West Media The sun has yet to make an appearance, and Mark Mazzocato is already hard at work. But on this morning -- like so many others in recent months -- it' s not paying the bills or providing for his young family that drives the Campbellville maple farm owner. "My mother' s a breast cancer survivor and my father' s battling prostate cancer, so it hits close to home for m e... like for just about everyone else." Mom and dad have provided more than enough incentive for Mazzocoato' s ongoing efforts to build a new course for this year' s Mudmoiselle women' s fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society' s Halton Unit. "Probably the biggest challenge is there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day," he said, as the August 26 event draws near. "But it' s a great cause." A former participant of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, Mazzocato joined the Mudmoiselle organizing committee last year -- figuring his construction contacts Parents provide unwavering motivation for Mark Mazzocato's com m itm ent to helping Canadian Cancer Society. | submitted photo and know-how provided a natural fit for the 5-km obstacle course. But when Community Fundraising Specialist Shelley Frank asked if the event could be moved from Kelso Park to his First Fine property Mazzocato admits there was some initial reservation. "I said `Well, there' s a bit of work to do here. But if you guys can help, let' s do it'. Oh boy has there been a lot of work -- a lot, a lot, a lot. I have a very patient wife. But when I think of my parents, that' s highly motivating." Since the last snow cleared, Mazzocato and a crew of six to eight have been busy designing and building the new course, which with the property' s rock terrain could make it one of the most challenging Mudmoiselles around. Along with the obvious muddy stretches, the Mazzocato Maple Farm course will feature a couple of wall climbs, a water crossing challenge and two massive tires that'll put participants' strength to the test. Said Mazzocato, "We try to make it a balance between being challenging but not too difficult, because it' s not a Spartan race." Mazzocato' s wife Kristi and a number of her friends are signed up for the thirdannual late-summer fundraiser, which is expected to draw roughly 400 women. Organizers are hoping to surpass last year' s tally of $110,095, which topped the inaugural total of $73,126. "I'm really excited for the Mudmoiselle to arrive," said Mazzocato, who' s gotten great support from such businesses as Goetz Construction, Deso Construction, CRS Rentals and Bang Creative! Mudmoiselle Milton runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, with participants required to raise a minimum of $150. Early-bird registration -- until July 31 -- is $50. After that, it' s $75.
