www.insidehalton.com |OAKVILLE BEAVER |Thursday, August 3, 2017 |8 Police warn newCRAscam variant making rounds in Halton Halton police are warning residents to be ware of a new version of the Canadian Rev enue Agency (CRA) scam after a 36-yearold Oakville resident was defrauded of more than $5,000. On July 17 police say the individual re ceived a call from someone claiming to be from the CRA who said the victim had an outstanding debt, which needed to be paid immediately in order to avoid arrest. Det. Mark Underwood with the Halton Regional Police Service Fraud Unit said the victim was directed to a local Bitcoin ATM machine to deposit the cash. Underwood said the anonymous digi tal wallet the funds are deposited into can then be transferred anywhere in the world making the suspect responsible very hard to trace. During the course of their investigation Underwood said an examination of the digi tal wallet the victim deposited their money into revealed that 17 deposits had been made in one 24-hour period totaling around $11,900 U.S. The source of all these deposits is not known, but police suspect they are all vic tims of fraud-related scams. Similar calls received Other Halton residents have contacted police in recent days saying they have also received similar calls from fraudsters claim ing to be from the CRA and demanding to be paid through Bitcoin ATMs. Police are again reminding the public that the CRA would never ask for payment to be made through gift cards or Bitcoin and would never use the phone as a first point of contact when dealing with clients. If contacted by the CRA in such a manner police recommend residents hang up. If residents have any doubts they are ad vised to contact the CRA after looking up the actual CRA phone number themselves. Residents are advised not to call back the individual who called them or use any phone number that person provided. P 2017 A ctive O A K VILLE Transportation M aster Plan U pdate Notice of Study Completion *The ATMP was introduced in 2009 and recommends an extensive network of facilities composed of on-road and off-road trails designed to respond to the needs of a range of active transportation users, ages and skill levels. Since then the Town of Oakville has introduced a total of 193 kilometres of bike lanes, pathways and signed bike routes as well as 110 bike racks across town. The 2017 ATMP Update was developed following extensive public and stakeholder consultation, and aims to expand and improve active transportation in Oakville to ensure a connected network of facilities that are safe, convenient, comfortable, and accessible. As well, the plan provides for continued promotional and educational programs to encourage cycling and walking year-round. The master plan study was completed in three phases and was developed consistent with Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) process. The Municipal Class EA process requires two points of contact with the public as part of the master planning process. To inform the update of the ATMP, several opportunities were provided to residents, stakeholders, technical agencies, staff and decision makers including an online web based survey and interactive mapping tool, two public information centres, two stakeholder meetings, a dedicated website and email. The comments and input were collected and reviewed -- at key stages over the course of the study -- to inform the proposed recommendations and strategies as well as the updated active transportation network.
