In 2016, the overall residential waste diversion rate was 58 per cent.This rate applies to all residential waste material managed by Halton Region through our programs and services.This is one of the highest residential waste diversion rates in Ontario! Joint Municipal-Regional Waste Management Committee The committee was established as a Condition of Approval for the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) when it opened in 1992.The committee advises Halton Regional Council regarding programs and strategies to promote the 3Rs-- reduce, reuse, recycle-- to minimize the amount of waste going to the landfill.The committee is comprised of 13 members from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. The primary focus for 2016 was to review the Waste Management Budget and Business Plan; inform committee members about the state of Extended Producer Responsibility in the Province of Ontario; and to initiate the development of the Solid Waste Management Strategy by reviewing other municipal waste strategies. Diversion Results Summary of residential materials diverted through Halton Region's waste management programs in 2016: · · · · · · Blue Box: 47,939 tonnes Green Cart: 27,694 tonnes Yard Waste: 27,510 tonnes Household Hazardous Waste: 825 tonnes (from 40,496 vehicles) Electronic Waste: 411 tonnes Other: 23,622 tonnes Total garbage landfilled at the HWMS: 68,418 tonnes.
