"It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Jane Hamilton. "It was something that completely appealed to me." The Canada C3 expedition is a 150-day sailing journey from Toronto, Ont., to Victoria, B.C., via the Northwest Passage aboard the Polar Prince -- a 67 metre Canadian research icebreaker and former Canadian Coast Guard vessel. The foundation, established in 2000, leads educational expeditions to the Artic and Antarctic. The federal government funded $4.8-million toward the Canada C3 expedition, which received almost 5,000 applications from across the country. Hamilton' s application focused on the theme truth and reconciliation. She is a member of the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) Truth and Reconciliation Working Group. Hamilton is also a board member of Susan Aglukark' s Artic Rose Foundation. Hamilton applied to be a journey participant in March and found out in June she would be joining the expedition. The expedition is broken into 15 10-day segments that will cover more than 12,000 miles, when completed Oct. 28. Each leg of the trip includes a range of people including: scientists, artists, writers, youth ambassadors, as well as indigenous and non indigenous people. Hamilton joined the Canada C3 on Canada Day (July 1) in Charlottetown, PEI, which is the birthplace of Confederation.
