In June o f this year, Ron and Charlotte C ross made a $45,000 donation in Diane's nam e to the O akville and District Humane Society. The money put the Society's fundraising drive over the top to allow it to finally install a m uch-needed sprinkler and w ater-supply system in the Cornwall Road shelter. The Hum ane Society had raised $28,000 for the project but was still several years and $45,000 away from having enough to start work. According to Ron and C harlotte, both Society members, they had the means to help and did. "(Diane's) last night was out walking with the dogs. She always had a great affection for animals," said Dr. Cross at the time. In addition to his wife, Charlotte, Dr. Cross is survived by his two daughters Barbara and Patricia and grandchildren Michael and Jack. Services were held Tuesday afternoon and Ward Funeral Home. In lieu o f flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or Ducks Unlimited. Q> O A K V I L L E T R A N S IT Popular orthodontist was avid outdoorsman Funeral services were held Tuesday for Dr. Ronald Cross, the popular Oakville orthodon tist and avid outdoorsman who passed away Christmas Eve after a year-long fight against cancer. Dr. Cross, whose father was a dentist, began his thriving local practice in the Sixties and was known for his quick wit in addition to his skill as a doctor. "Ron had a wonderful sense o f humour. That's what I remember m ost about him," said family friend Robert Dahlke, whose three children were patients of Dr. Cross. Dahlke described Dr. Cross as a sportsman and "100% con servationist" who loved fishing, hunting and taking his family camping. "He was a true sportsman and he loved the north country," said Dahlke. Dr. Cross' appreciation for nature was not limited to rural Ontario, however, and he and Charlotte maintained a lovely landscaped garden in the rear yard of their home. She was a diabetic who required four shots of medica tion daily. For weeks volunteers from across town and beyond spent enormous time combing woodlots and ravines all over Oakville in an attempt to locate Diane. On May 24, 1996 Diane's body was discovered on the porch of a summer cottage near St. Donat, Quebec. The cottage is only several miles from a camp where she once worked as a counselor.
