A8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, December 29,1999 Cause of townhouse fire may remain a mystery The cause of the Dec. 18th blaze which gutted a townhouse on Montclair Drive has been ruled "unde term ined" by the Oakville Fire Department. According to fire prevention officer Gary LaFramboise, an electrical source was considered but the amount of intense heat inside the townhouse made it difficult to pinpoint an exact cause. The family was enjoying an early family Christmas in the lower level of the Montclair townhouse when their grandson, Tim Matwey of Guelph went upstairs and saw the fire then sounded the alarm. With only one way out of the basement, Tim's warning may have meant the difference between life and death. The family - which included Tim's parents and two siblings - fled the house safely and dialed 911 from a neighbours place. Unfortunately the Hazeltons' pet cat Tiptoe died in the fire. Later that week a group of Oakville fire fighters appeared at the Hazelton fam ily's temporary lodgings where they played Santa to the couple's three grandchildren and supplied the Hazeltons with a decorated Christmas tree. As part of its annual RIDE (Reduce Impaired D r i v i n g Everywhere) blitz, Halton Regional Police conducted a special Oakville spotcheck on Friday, Dec. I7th. A total of 635 vehicles were stopped during the initiative, resulting in 10 roadside tests being adminis tered. A single 12hour suspension was issued and no impaired drivers were found. Twelve charges under the Highway Traffic Act were filed, however. "The Halton Regional Police Service continues to receive public support in the oper ation of the RIDE program," says Sgt. Frank Phillips. The OPP, who continue to con duct their own RIDE spotchecks, are also encourag ing drivers to take special cafe this holiday season. Unpredictable weather condi tions, increased road travel and the tendency to con sume alcohol while celebrating with family and friends are all factors which impact the safety of Ontarians. In an emer gency, the OPP can be accessed on cell phones by pressing the star symbol and "OPP". Even seeming ly safe inside the home, residents are asked to ensure that all smoke detectors and car bon monoxide monitors are checked and in working order.
