www.insidehalton.com |OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 21, 2017 |4 W om an bound fo r M exico on a puppy rescue mission by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff An Oakville animal lover will soon travel to Mexico where she will rescue five puppies and bring them to Canada so they can find loving homes. Janis Chase is a volunteer with the Ontario non-profit organization DIBS (Dogs in Better Spots). According to its website, the group is dedicated to saving homeless dogs in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Chase said DIBS works with veterinarians and rescue organizations to select dogs suitable for rescue and placement in Canadian foreverhomes. For the past few months, Chase has aided the group by serving as a foster parent to several of the dogs it has rescued and by holding fundraising and information events at local pet stores. Later this month, however, Chase will make her way to the eastern Mexican city of Playa del Carmen where she will bring donated supplies to several local animal shelters, with which her group works. "I' ve really found I have a passion for helping animals," said Chase. - -- --- "They need help and I' v e always wanted to do something like this." Chase said the bulk of the animals DIBS rescues comes from Mexico. She said the reason for this is there are simply more homeless and abandoned dogs in that country and fewer animal rescue groups looking out for them. "There are a lot of people there who do not spay or neuter their dogs and, as a result, stray dogs are very visible there compared to Canada," said Chase. "There is a massive need so that is where we focus." Chase described the five puppies she will be bringing to Canada as virtually identical brown, 10-11 month old Mexican mutts named Rosie, Tulip, Tily, Jasmine, and Poppy Their mother, Sofia, was a street dog who, along with her puppies, was taken in by Playa Animal Rescue, a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. All of these animals have been neutered and have gone through an extensive de-worming and the vet process to ensure no diseases or parasites are brought to Canada. Once the puppies arrive in Canada, they will be delivered to their foster families who will prepare them for adoption. "I'm going to foster one of them," said Chase. "Four other people are fostering the rest. We' ll be posting them on Pet Finder and on our website. We go through a screening process so if someone is interested they go through our website. We do a phone screening and a home visit and if we feel it is a good fit and they feel it is a good fit for them then we go through the adoption process." Chase noted that some of the proceeds from the adoptions pay for the vetting of other dogs in Mexico that will soon be coming to Canada. For more information, visit dibsrescue.com. Chase will also be holding a fundraiser/information event at the Oakville Pet Valu at 295 Hays Blvd., on Saturday, July 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For her trip she is seeking a variety of donations: · Medium and small collars · Bathroom rugs with rubber bottoms · Small and medium surgical gloves- sterile and non-sterile · Cat and dog toys · KMR kitten milk · Brushes to groom cats · Metal dog bowls · Used linens · Travel crates She can also be reached at janis. dibsrescue@gmail.com.
