Craig Henighan (Media Arts '95) received a nom ination for Outstanding Sound Edit ing for a Series for Stranger Things. For Gorin, this nomination is another chance to be recognized for her work on Fargo. She also w on an Emmy for best cast ing in 2014. Over her 26-year career, she has cast more than 200 television shows, m ovies, and m u sicals, including the Tony Award-winning musical Come From Away, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, and Mamma Mia. Her other television credits include the CBC/Netflix series Anne, an episode of the Netflix series Black Mirror, directed by Jodie Foster, and Global' s Private Eyes. Gorin credits her college education with giving her the skills to support actors during `Connected to your Community " Four Sheridan g ad s earn Emmy nominations by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff Four Sheridan College graduates have been nominated for Emmys in casting and sound editing, including Stephanie Gorin, in the category of Outstanding Casting for a Lim ited Series, Movie or Special for her work on the television series Fargo. It' s her fifth Emmy nomination. "Sheridan is extremely proud of its alumni w ho are being recognized for their outstand ing work in television," Dr. Mary Preece, president and vice chancellor of Sheridan, said in a press release. "Our programs continue to produce graduates w ho are in demand and w ho con tribute to top-rated programs across North America." The other Sheridan grads nominated for an Emmy are as follows. Alex Bullick (Media Arts '02) and Tyler Stephanie Gorin, 1981 graduate of Sheridan Music Theatre Program an audition, and to judge w ho is best suited for roles. "If it wasn't for the training I had at Sheri- dan College -- how to prepare for an audi tion, how to bring a character to life, acting classes and scene development, even vocal lessons and dance -- I w ouldn't have the skills to properly assess auditions for a vari ety of show s," she said. Graduates from Sheridan in the Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design in Oakville are renowned for their expertise, innovation and creativity. In 2015, Sheridan grads w on a Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Cre ative Achievem ent for a virtual reality proj ect, and last year three Sheridan alumni w on a Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Award for a children' s program called Niko and the Sword of Light. Then, in 2017, alumnus Alan Barillaro w on an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Other graduates have appeared on Broadway and have been recognized with m ultiple Ca nadian Screen Awards. The West End Jazz Series is off to a good start. The June 22 Big Band Show, which had 30 per formers, was sold out and the High Rendition youth band was the opening act. The June Garber Quartet appears at the July 29 show. And on Aug. 24, Bruce Cas sidy' s Hotfoot Orchestra per forms. Alex Pangman and Her Alleycats will be on stage Sept. 8. This year, the W illson Oakville Film Festival screened 19 feature length films and documen taries and 25 shorts, and the race for a winner in each category was tight. Some clear favourites quickly rose to the top of the ballot count, but in the end, two excel lent Canadian-made films were nominated. The screening of The Talk at the Oakville Film Festival marked the Canadian premiere for this 12-minute film following two parents as they try to navigate through the m ost uncom fortable conversation of all -- the sex talk with their teenage daughter. Other awards won Previously, The Talk w on the Gold Award for Best Short Film, and Best Director, along with the Platinum Award for Best Screenplay at the L.A. Shorts Awards. The short film also w on the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the Top Indie Film Awards 2017. "Thank you so m uch to the W illson Oakville Film Festival for this great honour. It was an absolute privilege to have been selected, yet alone w in the Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film ," Tanner Sawatzky, w ho wrote and produced the film, said in a media release. "It was the first time w e got to see our film play on the big screen and it was such a joy to listen to the laughs and the chuckles from the audience, beginning to end. Having the chance to screen our film in Oakville meant a lot to us, being that myself, Tyler Boyco, and the major ity of our crew all m et at Sheridan College just down the street." Live musical performance charms audience Musician Tyler Shaw stars in his first film role. Shaw charmed the audience before the screen ing with a special live musical performance. Previous to the film' s Canadian Premiere at the Oakville Film Festival, The Meaning of Life held its World Premiere in L.A. at the Dances with Films Festival, where it screened at the famed Chinese Theatre.
