Friday, December 29, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A15 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Earrings are designed to accent fashion trends (Continued from page A16) research some of the folklore behind the gem stones "that the kids were calling `power beads'," and came up with stories that they now include with each pair of earrings. For instance, if you buy hematite earrings, they come complete with a small felt bag for storage and a little card that reads: "Gem stones are believed to have healing powers based on the idea that they radiate energy that can improve one's spiritual, emotional or physical levels of well being. Hematite: for happiness." The felt bags, the siblings say, are convenient for display purposes - the earrings showcase nicely against a backdrop of coloured felt; for gift giving - "men don't have to worry about wrapping them;" for storage - they don't get lost in a big jewelry box; and for something different - a promotional strategy. Of the 15 different stones and crystals used in Designing Sisters' earrings, the popular ones, they say, are tiger's eye, yellow jade, hematite, black quartz and black onyx. But then the design ers are cognizant of the colours that are currently in fashion and try to create their earrings with stones that will blend with or complement those colours. "The colours were what attracted us to the stones," says the 37-year-old Theurer, adding, "We've always been earring fans. And we were finding it more and more difficult to find earrings that were different. A lot of the accessories are geared to the younger crowd." So, although their small, perhaps even dainty, earrings are not just for the 30-plus crowd, busi ness women do seem to buy the attractive gem stones as well as the antique and vintage crystal designs the sisters have added to complete their current line. "We just liked the crystal, especially the auro ra borealis - it really catches the light. They're great for this time of year," Theurer says of their crystal additions. "We've got coloured ones as well - pinks and blues and garnets...and other vintage beads as well. Ones that are unusual," adds Deonarine, 48, who estimates they've created over 500 pair of earrings to date. Theurer says the difference between the vin tage and the antique is that the antique "definite ly belonged to someone's grandmother," where as the vintage have a nebulous origin. "It's so hard to actually date them. So we kind of decided that anything 1950-and-before would Photo by Riziero Vertolli Earrings come complete with a colourful felt bag and an insert describing the history of the gems that `Designing Sisters' have used. be an antique, and (once they're) into the '60s, we call those vintage." "All the crystal we have so far are antiques. The vintage are other beads...m ostly glass beads," adds Deonarine. "They're old, but we're not sure how old they are." Designing Sisters earrings are available for $20 to $25 per pair in The Gallery Shop at 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E., D'Unique Comer in the Bronte Village Mall, and Rainbow Expressions Salon and Spa at 2318 Lakeshore Rd. W. "We donate $1 of every pair of earrings we sell to charity," says Deonarine, noting that the Oakville foodbank received their first donation, garnered from a couple of open houses. "We're keeping track, and at the end of the year, we'll just take the money and divide it up. We thought we would donate it to women's charities - breast cancer, Halton Women's Place...places like that." These designing women are also planning to expand their business by adding necklaces so they can offer necklace/earring sets. "Who knows where it will take us. People have been asking about brooches," says Theurer. "We've had quite a few requests for clip-on earrings," adds Deonarine, noting that their cur rent line is designed exclusively for pierced ears. "So we'll probably do some of those as well." And they've even considered developing a website so they can sell their line on-line. Per haps by then, they'll have reached their goal turning a part-time endeavour that covers their costs into a full-time money-making business.
