Wednesday, December 13, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B7 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Photo by Peter C. McCusker Gordon Vanderwoude, 8, recently won two firsts - one on violin and one on piano - at the Rotary Burlington Music Festival. The young Oakville musician has been playing both instru ments for four years and enjoys both. TWo firsts at his first competition By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR G ordon Vanderwoude is one happy eightyear-old. He ended up with two firsts in his first competitive performance. The Oakville musician was the youngest par ticipant to win firsts in his level at the second annual Rotary Burlington Fall Music Festival, which was hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Burlington and the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (Hamilton/Halton Branch). The Music Festival was open to amateur musicians in piano, woodwind, strings, vocal solo and choirs. And Gordon won in both piano and violin for his level - Grade 3 in piano, Book 2 in violin. "The children ranged from about (age) 10 to 13; six in each of the classes," says his mother, Armeda, noting that, since her son was in that particular class, the age range technically started at 8. Although confident in both piano and violin, Gordon says he was more nervous about his piano solo than his violin performance. "They (his opponents on piano) seemed to be a lot more advanced. They played a bit better," he explains, adding that the violin can present its own difficulties as well. "The bow can slip and slide...I have rosin, which makes it a bit sticky so it won't move that much." "On the piano, you have to hit the note," adds his mother. "On the violin you have to make it." Her multi-talented son, who names Bach's multifarious musical medleys as his favourites, has been studying piano and violin for the past four years. And although he's spent all of those years with one piano, his mother says, "Every time he gets a new pair of shoes, he gets a new violin." The Rotherglen student says it was his idea to take up both musical instruments when he was just a preschooler. "I thought it would be fun," he says, adding that he was right about that. "I like them both." And although he claims he doesn't need to be reminded to practise, mom suggests that, when it comes to the violin, her son does need a bit of encouragement. He doesn't, however, need encouragement to perform in public. He readily offers to play the piano and the violin for guests to his home, and he performs at the senior citizen's centre where his mother plays the piano every month. The Grade 4 student is also involved in jiu jitsu and sings in the school choir.
