Gazing at artist Robert Boast-Cornish's newest Christmas card, one gets lost in a scene of wintry bliss and enchantment. Lucky for Oakvillians, they don't have to wander far to experience the `real' picture, as downtown Oakville's Towne Square was his inspiration. Boast-Cornish's work, which was chosen to grace the front of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospi tal's Christmas card this year, includes all the ingredients o f a fes tive Oakville scene with the Millenni um Clock and the square's beautifully decorated Christmas tree as well as a horse-drawn sleigh, carolers, shop pers, kids and even a playful pup. "It was a fun painting," says Boast-Comish, a second-time winner of the annual art competition hosted by the Oakville Arts Council for the hospital. "I had wanted to paint the clock anyway." With the competition upcoming, Boast-Comish decided to combine his two projects. "It's such a charming area," he adds. "I wanted to emphasize (in the painting) that we are close to the lake." Boast-Comish did so by including Lake Ontario and Canada geese. The Christmas cards featuring Boast-Comish's painting and his lim ited edition print of the same painting have enjoyed a warm reception, not only from contest judges but from visitors to the OTMH gift shop and local galleries such as Concept Gal leries, Surroundings, The Framing Den, Greening's and The Peach Tree Gallery, where both are available. "It has really taken off. Everybody seems to love the scene," says BoastComish. "It's a fun painting, a happy painting." Each year, OTMH sends its cards to 10,000 Oakville homes, says Liz Dodge, manager of development for the OTMH Charitable Corporation, and the Yuletide tradition has "enjoyed wonderful, wonderful feed back." "It really has become an OTMH tradition," says Dodge. One o f the criteria is that artists be residents of Oakville, and they must submit an Oakville winter scene, either an original print, drawing or painting, historical or contemporary. "Each year we get 15 or 16 images submitted. Interestingly, every year we have a couple of artists who cre ate something specifically for this contest," says Dodge. "A lot of people send them over seas. They are proud of the town they live in and want to send an image that tells a story about their town," says Dodge. "We use the Christmas card to carry a message to our donors. It's a wonderful fund-raising tool for us (See `Earns' on page B7) Photo by Barrie Erskine Artist Robert Boast-Cornish, left, Liz Dodge and David Dorian of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Charitable Corporation and Gillian McIntyre of the Oakville Arts Council are pleased to be involved with the annual project that sees a painting by an Oakville artist selected to grace the front of Christmas cards for the hospital. Proceeds from the sale of the cards, which are available at the hospital gift shop and a few galleries around town, will go to OTMH.
